Salzburg has its own airport, but it is relatively small and direct international flights can be limited.
A convenient option is to fly into Vienna, which is about a 2.5-hour train ride from Salzburg. Trains to Salzburg depart directly from Vienna Airport, as well as from Vienna’s main station (Hauptbahnhof) and Westbahnhof. Train tickets can be booked through Austrian Railways (ÖBB) (https://www.oebb.at/en/), which operates trains from the airport and the main station, or through Westbahn (https://westbahn.at/en/), which operates trains from Westbahnhof.
Alternatively, you can fly into Munich, which is about a 2-hour train ride from Salzburg. Train tickets can be booked with Deutsche Bahn (DB) (https://int.bahn.de/en?dbkanal_007=sprachauswahl-en), Austrian Railways (ÖBB) (https://www.oebb.at/en/), or Westbahn (https://westbahn.at/en/). Please allow around 45 minutes to travel from Munich Airport to either Munich main station (Hauptbahnhof) or Munich east station (Ostbahnhof), where trains to Salzburg depart.
In our experience, traveling via Vienna tends to be less stressful, as train services in Germany can sometimes be less reliable. If you are flying out of Munich, be sure to allow plenty of time for the journey from Salzburg to Munich.
