Project Description

Salud Urbana en América Latina (SALURBAL), Urban Health in Latin America, is a five-year project that studies how urban environments and urban policies impact the health of city residents throughout Latin America. SALURBAL’s findings inform policies and interventions to create healthier, more equitable, and more sustainable cities worldwide. SALURBAL is funded by the Wellcome Trust.

Salud Urbana en América Latina (SALURBAL) es una investigación de cinco años cuyo objetivo es estudiar cómo el ambiente urbano y las políticas urbanas afectan la salud de los residentes de las ciudades latinoamericanas. Los resultados de este proyecto servirán como referencia para informar futuras políticas e intervenciones para que las ciudades sean más saludables, equitativas y sostenibles en todo el mundo. SALURBAL es financiado por el Wellcome Trust.

Projeto SALURBAL, Saúde Urbana na América Latina, é um projeto de cinco anos que estuda como os ambientes urbanos e as políticas urbanas impactam a saúde dos moradores das cidades em toda a América Latina. As descobertas do SALURBAL informam políticas públicas e intervenções com o intuito de criar cidades mais saudáveis, mais justas e mais sustentáveis em todo o mundo. Ana Diez Roux, MD, PhD, MPH

Ana Diez Roux is the director and principal investigator of the SALURBAL project

Ana V. Diez Roux, MD, PhD, MPH, is Dean and Distinguished University Professor of Epidemiology in the Dornsife School of Public Health at Drexel University. Originally trained as a pediatrician in her native Buenos Aires, she completed public health training at the Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health. She is the Co-Director of the Drexel Urban Health Collaborative.

Dr. Diez Roux is internationally known for her research on the social determinants of population health and the study of how neighborhoods affect health. Her work on neighborhood health effects has been highly influential in the policy debate on population health and its determinants. Her research areas include social epidemiology and health disparities, environmental health effects, urban health, psychosocial factors in health, cardiovascular disease epidemiology, and the use of multilevel methods. Recent areas of work include social environment-gene interactions and the use of complex systems approaches in population health.
