We are currently using Flock security cameras, which identify the license plate, make, model, color, and approximate year of passing cars, automatically check an online database, and then report to local police any vehicles that are stolen and/or identified with criminal activity. The cameras are similar to those used at all local bridges to read license plates and bill auto owners for tolls. Flock's web site is here.
The Flock security camera system provide 24/7 coverage of all vehicles entering and exiting the neighborhood at a reasonably low cost. We have installed these cameras at three entry points to our neighborhood.
City police detectives currently use data from Flock security cameras that are in and around our city and neighboring cities. The security cameras provide photographic evidence that can and is being used by law enforcement to confirm witness observations and support prosecutions.
Multiple neighborhoods in Oakland, San Leandro, Berkeley, Rockridge etc. are using flock cameras.
Our implementation adds more data points into this central flock system which is monitoring by multiple police departments in the bay area.
In addition to the plate and vehicle make and model, the system records the frequency that a vehicle enters the neighborhood, and even if a car's license plate is changed or obscured the system can recognize a car through unique characteristics such as a bumper sticker or damage. The Flock security cameras are solar powered and internet-connected.
Neighbors can request that their license plates and those of frequent visitors be put on an exception list of known, good vehicles so that the system does not record them. Details here.
We will also post signs in our neighborhood that we’re using this license-plate reading technology, as an additional deterrent.
