Early Racing

On March 15, 1987, a record-breaking field of 2,697 finishers flooded the streets for the City of Bath Half Marathon. SADAC athletes put on an impressive display of distance running across multiple age categories:

• The Master Blinder: Foundational veteran Barry Tomlinson (V40) ran an absolute blinder, clocking a blistering 1:14:06 to finish 147th overall in a massive regional field.

• Senior Men's Depth: The club packed the mid-league rankings tightly, with S. James crossing the line in 1:22:24, followed by T. Haylor (V40) in 1:22:37, C. Chandler (V40) in 1:27:12, and T. Lund (V45) in 1:27:29.

• The Long-Distance Contingent: Master athlete A. Christmas (V55) conquered the 13.1-mile loop in a highly competitive 1:30:48, while M. Rudge logged 1:31:59, N. Woodall (V40) ran 1:33:56, and J. Carter (V55) registered a rock-solid 1:45:35.

• The Ladies' Charge: The Stroud ladies team locked down excellent times, anchored by S. Jones, who crossed the line in 1:49:00 (placing 169th in the ladies' field), closely followed by A. Campbell (L40) finishing in 1:49:41.

Stroud sent a massive 36-strong contingent down to Wood Lodge in Bristol, netting fantastic team scores across the board:

• Senior Men's Pack: Chris Frapwell spearheaded the senior men's trail effort, finishing 56th overall in a stacked field with a time of 26:43. He was backed tightly by Norman Long in 97th (28:05), J. Gillett in 134th (29:19), and D. Long in 138th (29:25) to lock down 18th place overall in the team standings. They were supported out on the course by M. Fryer (29:52), Tony Brown (30:45), Richard Lee (30:51), G. Curtis (30:57), Tim Cock (31:29), and W. Chandler (31:53).

• Intermediate Ladies (5th Team - 70 pts): Anchored by a brilliant top-10 performance from Sarah Hodge, who claimed 10th place overall in 15:19. She was supported by J. Oglethorpe in 29th (16:42) and Sally Cross in 31st (16:54).

• Junior Ladies (13th Team - 128 pts): Led out beautifully by E. Mears, who crossed the line in 15th place overall with a time of 11:26. She was backed by youth prospects K. Smith in 55th (12:54) and R. Brown in 58th (13:02).

• Youths & Boys Academy: Youth star S. Hodges paced the under-19 field with a high-ranking 16th place finish in 17:13. He was supported by S. Cock in 66th (19:10), D. Chandler in 94th (22:06), and S. Wapshott in 95th (22:50) to land 11th team overall. In the Boys' race, young prospects J. Brown (14:49), J. Burridge (16:05), and S. Chandler (17:28) fought hard on the technical grassland to net 15th place in the team standings.

Stroud's runners put on an absolute masterclass across the flat layout at Victoria Park, creating history in the all-time performance ledgers:

• The Historic Youth Record: In the Youths division, Stroud's P. Jones ran an absolute blinder, blowing the regional field away to take 1st Place overall in a blistering 16:15. This time was so fast that it was officially logged into the Bath & Percy tournament history book as the 4th fastest performance in the entire history of the event. He was backed up by S. Hodges in 16th (17:13) and S. Cock in 66th (19:10).

• Senior Road Kings: In the flagship senior race, Chris Frapwell finished in a brilliant 8th place overall against the region's top road racers, clocking 20:26. His performance earned him the rank of the 33rd fastest senior men's time recorded at the venue across the entire decade. The Senior "A" team secured a prestigious 10th place out of 39 regional clubs, rounded out by Barry Tomlinson in 57th (22:53) and Tony Brown in 69th (23:24).

The club captured 3rd Place in the Senior Team Standings (36 points) thanks to the locked-in packing of Norman Long, Brandon Wynn, and Richard Lee.

1986 Eric Andrews Memorial XC (November 9)

Junior front-runner Jeremy Brown continued his excellent 1986 cross-country campaign, traveling to this memorial fixture and capturing a highly competitive 6th place overall in the Youths division with a time of 19:37.

2002 Gloucestershire League Cheltenham XC (February 16)

Fast-forwarding in the archive, a senior and veteran men's team ledger shows the enduring multi-generational racing lifespan of the club's members on the mud:

• Chris Frapwell: Paced the club at the front of the field, capturing 4th place overall in 33:00.

• R. Briers: Placed 55th overall with a Vet 55 time of 38:44.

• J. Brown: Finished 58th overall in 39:31.

• C. Young: Finished 59th overall in 45:34 in the Vet 45 bracket.

• Tim Cock: Logged a Vet 60 finish of 40:26 (placing 102nd).

• George Burridge: Crossed closely behind in 105th place with a Vet 55 time of 40:45.

On July 7, 1984, the demanding roads of Wotton-under-Edge played host to the annual Syngell 10-Mile road race. The fixture featured an elite showdown of Gloucestershire's top running powerhouses, culminating in a fierce team points battle between Gloucester AC, Dursley & District, and Stroud & District AC.

The Front of the Pack

• The Race Title: N. Thomas of Gloucester AC captured an outstanding overall victory, crossing the line in a lightning-fast time of 54:29.

• Stroud’s Trailblazers: Leading the home club charging block was veteran ace N. Long, who finished as the first Stroud runner home in a superb 6th place overall with a time of 59:15.

• The Top Ten Contenders: Stroud's competitive depth was on full display as youth prospect B. Wynn clinched a top-ten standing, crossing the line in 10th place at 62:37.

Masters and Ladies Standards

• Veteran Milestones: Stroud’s legendary multi-sport master competitor Ron Ellis put on a dominant display in the Over-50 category, clocking 62:52 for 13th place overall and capturing the First Veteran Over 50 title.

• Pack Tracking: The club's veteran vanguard packed tightly together mid-race, with G. Curtis (51st in 80:01) and C. Russell (52nd in 80:05) battling step-for-step across the finishing mat.

• The Team Podium: Powered by the compact packing of Long, Wynn, and Ellis, Stroud & District AC successfully captured 3rd Place Overall in the master team championships, trailing closely behind winners Gloucester AC and runners-up Dursley & District.
