From local lanes to world-stage achievements, the competitive racing heritage of Stroud and District Athletic Club spans more than four decades. While we train together as a community every Tuesday and Thursday at Archway School, our real pride shines when we welcome the wider running world to the Stroud Valleys for our own club-hosted promotions.
Organized by our dedicated, deeply experienced race committees, our events are built by runners, for runners. We combine professional, top-tier organization with the welcoming, grassroots energy that has defined our club since its inception in 1979.
Inaugurated on a Sunday morning in October 1982 with a field of just 622 finishers, the Stroud Half Marathon has since exploded into Gloucestershire's premier road race and one of the most respected half marathons in Great Britain.
Runners from across the UK and international boundaries travel to our vale, consistently drawn to Stroud by a perfect racing cocktail:
Flat and Exceptionally Fast: Our officially certified, accurately measured 13.1-mile closed-road course has earned a fierce national reputation as an ultimate personal-best hunter's ground.
A Testing Ground for Greatness: Over the decades, the streets of Stroud have witnessed legendary front-end battles featuring Olympians and elite internationals, while simultaneously setting the stage for multiple Age-Group World and British Best times.
A Vehicle for Community Impact: Dating back to our historic 1984 edition—which launched our first official charity drive for the local Hollybrook House appeal—our races have raised thousands of pounds for vital local causes, including the Cotswold Care Project and the League of Friends of Stroud Hospitals.
While the Half Marathon stands as our flagship autumn spectacle, the club’s year-round racing calendar spans a vibrant mix of surfaces, testing everything from absolute pure speed to cross-country grit:
The Stroud Beer Race: A classic, undulating summer staple twisting roughly 7.2 miles across Minchinhampton Common, traditionally starting and finishing at the Old Lodge Inn.
The Frampton 10K: A beloved, lightning-fast flat road race that perfectly blends fierce regional competition with a relaxed community barbecue atmosphere.
The Standish Woodland Chase: A grueling, classic 10-mile multi-terrain challenge that pushes athletes up the steep incline of the Cotswold Edge before treating them to a fast, technical descent back to the vale.
The Kings Stanley 10K 1993: A fast, multi-lap evening road race circuit slicing through local village lanes.
The Woodchester Park Race: A beautiful yet demanding trail race looping through the historic, wooded valleys of Woodchester Park. While the exact inception date and early results of this classic trail fixture are currently being unearthed from the club archives, it remains a legendary test of off-road pacing and grit.Â

The historical data, race logs, and foundational milestones preserved across these race information pages have been meticulously compiled from Stroud & District AC's official physical archives and matching public records. The primary source materials utilized for this initial launch framework include:
Verbatim Club Publications: Strategic data—including entry numbers, original route profiles, elite runner fields, and local business sponsorships—is drawn directly from official vintage race programmes, including the 1979/80 Season Review and the 1984, 1988, 1989, 1990, and 1992 Stroud Half Marathon Brochures.
Founder Records & Personal Logbooks: Key operational context regarding the club’s initial 1979 public launch meeting, administrative committees, and inner workflows stems from the personal notebooks, blue logbooks, and recorded interviews of foundational General Secretary Jackie Taylor.
Contemporary Media Coverage: Supplementary athletic context, regional race dates, and structural timelines were cross-referenced against historical local sports reporting, including archived race day fixtures from The Citizen (1993).
Please note that this digital archive is an ongoing preservation project. The historical record will be continually updated and expanded as further vintage brochures, missing results sheets, classic photographs, and trail fixtures—such as the early timeline for the Woodchester Park Race—are unearthed from the club vault and verified.
If you possess any old race materials or personal club memorabilia that could help fill the blanks, please contact a member of the committee so we can permanently preserve it in The Vault.
