Paper Trails is coming to Nanaimo Fringe Festival 2026!
In Between - TENSION explores the relationship between connective relations of performers, bodies, and rope within the frame of cusp. Within a limited diamond floor frame, In Between - TENSION is a duet showing a playful competition between two performers. Maintaining the tension of a rope, performers compete for the upper hand in performative Tug of War.
We started this piece with the vague notion of two forces on the cusp of touching, but never quite meeting one another. Think: Michelangelo's The Creation of Adam; or the edge of a forest fire, an event of mass destruction, burning just up to someone's property line but never quite crossing because it was fought off just in time.
Using a rope, we experimented with bodyweight, using ourselves and each other as anchors.
Keeping the notion of a constant state of tension in mind, this piece explores a variety of movements, including spatial, bodily, and personal relations, improvisation, choreography, and competition with an end hanging in stasis.
