As soon as Tupelo won the North Half Championship and was heading to State for the second year in a row, I knew I wanted to do a package on this big achievement. Just like everyone else, I expected Tupelo to win and I thought I would be reporting on a back-to-back State Championship title. With 2 seconds left of the game, Gulfport had thrown a Hail Mary, winning the game by one point. I knew reporting on the game was going to be tough. After discussing the best way to go about this story, my classmates and I decided to focus more on the fan's reaction.
Writing
Normally when I produce a package, I get my interviews first so I can transcribe what they say and write around it. With this story, I wanted it to be different than other packages I have done. So, after I knew how I was going about this story, I immediately started writing. I had a certain vision with how I wanted to edit this story, and the original script reveals it.Â
Interviews
I knew I wanted to interview several people to help strengthen this story. With the help of my classmates, we made a list of people from different grades. While making the list, we kept in mind people who had been to most of the games, who kept up with the team, and who understood just how big a Hail Mary actually was. I used a total of seven interviews with one of them being Chris Shoup, a former football coach who now commentates the games. The rest of the interviews are students from different grades.
Re-Writing/Editing
After listening and transcribing my interviews, I was able to pick out where each sound bite was going to go. While I was editing, I started to realize the length of my package was going to be over 3 minutes. As much as I didn't want to, I ended up having to take out a whole VO as well as other short sentences. Despite the loss, this package was enjoyable to produce and I am very pleased with how it turned out. I was able to learn how to go about a sensitive subject and it also challenged me by having to cut out much more than I wanted too.
