Freshman Year
Sports Story: Upcoming Star
Best Sports Story - MSPA Spring 2023
This story was the second sports story I ever produced. I highlighted a football player, Ja'Reylan McCoy, who worked hard and received many offers as a freshman. Now, he has signed to play with the Florida Gators. It's so cool to be able to go back and watch this story and see how far he's come the past four years.
News Story: THS Brew
Best News Story Finalist - MSPA Spring 2023
When I was deciding what I wanted my first news story to be, I instantly thought of the new Coffee Brew Business that the Business class at Tupelo High School had opened. I added nat-sound to the beginning of the story to emphasize one of the steps they take in order to make coffee. I had a lot of fun producing this story and seeing what all they do behind the scenes.
Sophomore Year
Sports Story: The Legacy of Coach Reed
Two years ago, the head Baseball coach at Tupelo High School announced his resignation. I interviewed not only Coach Reed himself, but his son, Lake Reed, and another Senior player who had been on the team since the beginning of his High School years. I was able to film his last game where all of the players lined up to hug him at the end. This has been one of my favorite stories I have ever produced. It was such a sentimental piece and I'm glad I had the opportunity to cover it.
Junior Year
Sports Story: 7A State Champs
Last year, Tupelo High School's football team won the 7A State Championship. This was the first time Tupelo had won since 1992. I was able to attend the game in Hattiesburg, Mississippi and support the Golden Wave. Going to the game and being able to come back and report on the win was such a fun experience. I was able to interview several people, including players, one of the coaches, and a teacher who had also attended the last State Championship game in 1992.
Sports Story: Soaring to New Heights
During her Senior year, Morgan Brown was apart of the cheer, track, and power lifting team, as well as being a gymnast outside of school. In gymnastics, she was at the highest level you could reach. She also competed in several competitions, including regional and national ones. I knew Morgan personally from her being in WTHS previous years. Being able to spend the afternoon with her and watching her flip and turn was such a fun experience.
Sports Story: From Struggle to Strength - A Swimmer's Comeback
One of my best friends, Reagan Thomas, went through a huge surgery that hit pause on the beginning of her swim season. She had a Spinal Fusion the Summer before our Junior Year to fix her Scoliosis. Over the summer, I would visit her and I could see how painful her recovery was. I didn't expect her to make a comeback as fast as she did. I was so proud when I found out she was swimming at State, and even more proud when she placed. This package was so inspiring and heartwarming to put together.
Senior Year
Sports Story: Heat Waves
Honorable Mention - JEA/NSPA National Convention
With school starting back and sports getting ready to start their seasons, the Summer heat had a huge affect on their practices. It even put 11 band members in the hospital. I have done stories about the brutal heat in the past, but this year the effects were much bigger.
Sports Story: New Position, Same Mission
As the 2025 football season started, Tupelo lost their Quarterback. Senior Running Back, JJ Hill was chosen to step up and take the spot. Last year, he won the title of Mr.Football for 7A for his success as Running Back and helping lead the team to a State Championship. Switching positions can be tough, but overall JJ continued to have the same goal - which was to lead Tupelo to another State Championship. His hard work throughout the season lead him to achieve the Mr.Football for 7A title for the second year in a row.
News Story: Crowning Moment
Homecoming is one of the biggest nights that most students at Tupelo High School look forward too. One of the biggest questions throughout the week is "Who do you think Homecoming Queen is going to be?" This year, A'Myah Dancer was crowned. I remember being in the student section and when her name was called, everyone jumped up and screamed. It was such a cheerful and fun environment and everyone was able to express their joy when their Queen was revealed. Normally when we report on the Homecoming Queen, we always wait until the following Monday at school to interview them. This year my staff mates Jolen Mckenzie and JaNiya Harris were able to interview A'Myah after she was crowned. This added so much emphasis to the story as you can see her crown, sash, dress, and bouquet of flowers.
Feature Story: Music to your Ears
Structure is a Rock band at Tupelo who hosts a showcase every semester, but also preforms for the show choir group. I have always been amazed with how well the group preforms and after attending their first showcase, I knew I wanted to feature them. I produced a package on the band last year to help promote their Spring showcase, but I wanted to do something different this year. My advisor has shown my class several examples of Natural Sound packages and after watching them, I knew that was how I wanted to approach this package. From the four years I've been in WTHS, a Natural Sound package hasn't been done. It was odd at first, not having to write a script and just jump into editing, but overall I am very happy with how this turned out.
Sports Story: Final Second Shock
As Tupelo was playing in the State Championship for football for the second year in a row, the final play of the game shocked everyone. Gulfport threw a Hail Mary, winning the game in the last 2 seconds. I knew reporting on this loss was going to be difficult, so I turned it into a fan reaction package. I interviewed multiple students and one of the former coaches about their thoughts on the game.
Feature Story: Sweeping The Competition: Grand Champions
For the first time ever, Tupelo High School's show choir group, Synergy, won grand champion at their first competition of the year. They placed first in best visuals, vocals, and overall effects. I was able to interview Ms. Danielle Ratliff, the Synergy Director, as well as 3 other students. I used reaction videos sent in by several student to emphasize how big this achievement was. I also used Nat Sound pops of them singing in this package.
Intros
Every semester we like to come up new intros. I had never made one before, but this year I made the sports and show intro. For the first couple shows, the intros had clips from previous years since the year just started and nothing had happened yet. Eventually, the music changed, more clips were added, and each time they improved.
Show Intro
I used various clips from different events to showcase different students at Tupelo High School. I also included a clip of the student section during one of the football games and turned the Natural Sound up to have more emphasis.
Sports Intro
After my class and I had decided on the music, I knew I wanted to edit it on beat. I was able to match up the Cheerleaders, Volleyball and Baseball players clapping on beat.
Behind The Scenes
Over the years, I have been behind the scenes helping with interviews, filming other staff mate's on cameras, filming sports or other school related activities, taking pictures for social media, and so much more. A lot of work goes into producing a package and sometimes it can be challenging for just one person. That's where teamwork comes in. I am grateful that I can be there to help any of my staff mates when they need me too!
