This activity will build a reusable, modular modelling infrastructure for sustainable and active transport in Greater Melbourne by extending two existing RMIT capabilities. AToM, the Activity and Agent-based Transport Model of Melbourne, provides the city-scale agent-based modelling foundation for testing how population, household and network changes affect travel behaviour. FASTrack, the Fast Active Transport Scenario Testing tool, provides the user-facing workflow for testing active transport infrastructure scenarios and translating model outputs into planning indicators.
The activity responds to a practical problem faced by researchers, transport agencies and planners: while agent-based transport models are powerful analytical tools for decision support, their use in practice is often limited because they are difficult to update, difficult to use, and not easily translated into policy-relevant scenario testing. Planners and researchers need fit-for-purpose tools to assess infrastructure investment and its impacts on individual and household travel choices, transport emissions and health outcomes. However, many existing synthetic populations and agent-based transport models are static, hard to enrich with new datasets, and difficult to adapt to emerging policy questions.
