Whenever members of the RFC want to take a title from each other, they do so by issuing Challenges.
The nature of a challenge is dependent on the specific tile being fought over, but most follow a similar process.
When challenging someone, the person issuing the challenge is the "Challenger" and the person being challenged is the "Titleholder".
To challenge someone, a Challenger goes to the appropriate section of the Discord server (depending on the title) and writes a message to the Titleholder (using the Discord @mention function in the message). At this point, the Titleholder has 24 hours to write a reply to the challenge. Once the Titleholder replies to the issued challenge, both participants will schedule a a time to carry out the challenge.
NOTE: Make sure the issued challenge and/or response message properly pings the other person, otherwise it may not count as a valid challenge/response (because they probably won't see it).
WARNING: Failure to respond is considered a neglect of your responsibilities as a Titleholder, and punishment can for this neglect can be worse than a simple loss of your title. If you know you won’t be available to respond in advance, please let moderators know ahead of time so they can manually intervene. As long as you show a willingness to fight eventually, you, your opponent, and the mods can work together to find a working solution.
At the moment the Titleholder responds to the issued challenge, the challenge is automatically given a tentative scheduled time of Exactly 24 hours after the Titleholder's reply. This time is usually inconvenient, so it is expected that the Challenger and Titleholder will discuss amongst each other and schedule a more convenient time themselves.
NOTE: To keep the challenges going for everyone who wants a shot at a title, it is highly preferred that the scheduled challenge time is as soon as possible. If you and your opponent cannot find a time before the automatic tentative time, consider cancelling the challenge until a more convenient time for both participants. You may schedule a time after the automatic tentative time, but if it is too far into the future, a moderator may ask you to cancel the challenge to avoid holding others up.
WARNING: Titleholders have a lot of power to force the timing of a challenge by choosing when they respond to the challenge. Using this to inconvenience the Challenger (ex: scheduling it when the Challenger might be tired and therefore easier to beat) is permitted, but using it to avoid fighting at all is considered dishonorable and, if overused, can prompt moderator intervention. It is expected that people defend their titles primarily by merit in challenges, not by merit in avoiding them.
Once the schedule time for the challenge arrives, the challenge itself may begin.
The nature of a challenge differs depending on the title being fought over, but the vast majority are decided by Duels. For challenges decided by duels, the Challenger starts off as the Attacker, and the Titleholder starts off as the Defender. Consult the Duel Guide for details on how to conduct a duel, and the specific title being fought over for any special conditions.
NOTE: Failure to appear at the scheduled time (within reasonable deviation) is considered an automatic loss, but is not otherwise punishable.
Title Fights are managed in the Title Fights forums on the Discord server. Challenges for the titles within will have special rules applied based on the title being fought for, and may even have requirements you must possess beforehand.
Not every title is won through a challenge, but those that are will be handled within the post for that title.
Each individual numbered rank in the Arena is considered its own title to hold and defend.
Because of the heavily structured nature of the Arena and its rankings, there are heavy restrictions on when and how you can issue challenges for Arena ranks:
If you already possess an Arena rank, you may only issue challenges for the rank directly above your own.
If you do not possess an Arena rank, but do possess the Prospect role in the Discord, you may issue challenges for the lowest existing rank in the Arena.
If you possess no Arena rank nor the Prospect role, you cannot issue challenges for Arena ranks.
If the person you wish to challenge is part of another existing Arena rank challenge, you must wait until it is over before challenging them.
Arena rank challenges are handled in the Dueling Hall channel on the Discord, and are done through threads made by the challenger.
The thread’s title MUST be in this format: "[Your Pilot Name] [Your rank] vs [Opponent’s Pilot Name] [Opponent’s Rank]"
If you are following the Nickname requirements as a member of the Arena, you will have noticed that the above format is equivalent to: "[Your RFC Discord Nickname] vs [Your Opponent’s RFC Discord Nickname]"
This thread will be used for this challenge and any future challenges for this rank until one of the following happens:
The Challenger wins the challenge
The Titleholder no longer has the specific rank they are defending in this thread (such as by winning their own challenge elsewhere)
Pictured below are examples of real and valid thread titles in the Arena.
Note: Special for the last example, the Challenger has no rank and the Titleholder has "gatekeeper" written after their rank. This is the expected result of a Prospect issuing a challenge in the Arena.
