In Memorium

One of the hardest parts of rescuing animals is losing them. And in farm animal rescue, many animals are lost younger than other species because they have been bred to such extremes they are prone to many health issues.

Scary fact: 30% of chickens get cancer by 2 years old. This is what we have done to them, forcing their bodies to produce an unsustainable amount of eggs.

We have made this page as a memorial to some of the very special souls that we have lost since starting our rescue.

Martha Jones

Martha was from one of our first group of hens we ever adopted, and she lived the longest as well. After getting her in the fall of 2019 (she came from an abandonment situation), she came down with egg yolk peritonitis. We were able to have a bird veterinarian spay her and she survived the procedure, and went on to live another 4 years, living to the good old age of over 10. In the summer of 2023 we let her go when her failing health finally got to her.

Nina Sharp

Nina was found wandering the streets of Sacramento the summer of 2021. She joined us with an upper respiratory infection but got better with treatment from Lindsey. She was always the star of the party when we had people over to visit. In the summer of 2023 she was sadly killed by wandering neighborhood dogs that dug in to our property. Losing Nina was devastating, and inspired us to adopt a livestock guardian dog as an additional defense for our animals.

Osgood

Osgood was adopted in the summer of 2019 from a factory farm situation. Despite being abused and featherless, she was fearless and friendly. We had her for two years until she developed a severe uterine prolapse.

Astrid

Astrid came to us from a factory farm nearly naked in 2019. She was terrified of people, but over the years that we had her she grew to enjoy attention and pets, and would sometimes sit with us on the couch inside. She passed from egg yolk peritonitis in the fall of 2022 after we had her for three years.

Donna Noble

Donna also joined the family in the fall of 2018. She was initially abandoned at a feed store, and then rescued by one of the workers there. Donna was the sweetest turkey, but as she aged she started struggling with chronic pain, arthritis, and difficulty walking. Lindsey was able to manage it with aggressive multimodal pain medications for a period, but in February 2024 Donna crossed the rainbow bridge when we felt we could not control her pain any longer.

Leela

Leela came to us in 2023, and she was definitely the coop supervisor. She had to watch and approve of all cleaning activities. Leela died suddenly and unexpectedly in the summer of 2024. We were worried about something heat or flu related, but a necropsy at UCDavis revealed egg impaction and rupture of her reproductive tract as the cause of her passing. Leela was a wonderful bird who loved to supervise all you were doing and we miss her terribly.

Darth Maul

Darth Maul, despite his name, was one of the biggest, sweetest roosters ever. He joined us in August 2024 from an abandonment situation. In January 2025 he developed paralysis, likely from Marek's disease. Despite medications and even trying him out in a wheelchair, he did not improve, so we decided to let him go with dignity.

Cloaca Chloe

•Chloe got her name cause she prolpased her cloaca just a week after rescue, but Lindsey, our founder and president AND veterinarian, was able to replace it and treat her. She did well for one year until she prolapsed her cloaca again but this time it had a large tumor that prevented it being replaced.

Alison

Alison was a bold, beautiful, brave ewe. She gave birth to Riker and Geordi in March 2025. She passed away suddenly 5 days later, and a necropsy revealed a unexpected massive stomach ulcer and bleed. The most common symptom of these abomasal bleeds is sudden death. The pathologist told us there was no way we could have predicted or prevented this, but we were so devastated by her loss.

Winifred Sanderson

Winifred joined us on Halloween of 2024. She had a bad case of bumblefoot. She initially recovered, but in May 2025 the infection came back in her joint and multiple treatment attempts failed. She did get to spend her last couple months living happily as a house chicken. We loved Winifred and miss her so much.

Geordi

Geordi was born to Alison in the spring of 2025. Alison had arrived to us pregnant. Geordi was born weak and with congenital cataracts. He had digestive issues from day 1, and by one month of age developed a urinary obstruction. Despite numerous surgeries at Davis he did not make it.

Tecteun

Tecteun joined us in 2024 as a discarded factory farm chicken. She came to us featherless and jaundice. She had an amazing glow up and lived a happy two years with us before passing from reproductive cancer. She was friends with pigs, chickens, and turkeys alike.

Yuki

Yuki was our tireless livestock guardian dog and Carol's best friend for two years before passing from bone cancer. Not only is Yuki missed by many of our followers and visitors, Inigo the sheep and Carol the cow had incredible bonds with Yuki. She developed bone cancer at just 1.5 year of age but lived to be just under 3 before she crossed the rainbow bridge when her pain became too much to manage.

Gwen Cooper

Gwen was rescued from the factory farm industry in the summer of 2023. Shortly after arriving at the ranch she came down with a terrible illness. She required intensive care and numerous medications for two weeks before recovering. She stayed in the house during that time, and for several weeks after to help her regain her strength and weight. Once she was fully recovered and ready to reintegrate with her chicken friends, she made it clear she preferred being a house chicken, and since then has decided of her own accord to live in the house with her dog and cat friends. In July 2025 she passed away in her sleep, and there is a huge hole left behind by her.

Bellatrix

Bellatrix was adopted by us from an animal shelter in the spring of 2023. She had been confiscated by animal control in Sacramento County for head butting children in her neighborhood. While kind of funny, Bellatrix could do some serious damage with her horns. She remained a spit fire until the end. She did have a sensitive stomach, and passed away in July 2025 with minimal warning.
