Micro:bit

Description

The BBC micro:bit is a pocket-sized computer that introduces you to how software and hardware work together. It has an LED light display, buttons, sensors and many input/output features that you can program and physically interact with. The latest micro:bit adds sound sensing and playback capabilities.

Targeted audience: Elementary cycle 3 and Secondary

Material: 1 Micro:bit
a computer

Use Microsoft Makecode to write the program with Blocks.
If students are more advanced, use Python or JavaScript.

Preparation

Pair up.

Take one Micro:bit

Open the MakeCode site.

Follow the steps to create the following projects:

Challenge 1: Flashing Heart

      • Select the Flashing Heart tutorial.

      • Select the Block tutorial.

      • Program the Micro:bit as shown on the screen.

      • Follow the tutorial to transfer the program on the Micro:bit.

Challenge 2: Name Tag

      • Select the Name Tag tutorial.

      • Select the Block tutorial.

      • Program the Micro:bit as shown on the screen.

      • Follow the tutorial to transfer the program on the Micro:bit.

Challenge 3: Rock, paper, scissors

      • Select the Rock, paper, scissors tutorial.

      • Select the Block tutorial.

      • Program the Micro:bit as shown on the screen.

      • Follow the tutorial to transfer the program on the Micro:bit.

      • If you'd like to play Rock, paper, scissors with a partner, there are 2 options:

          • Play with a partner who also did this tutorial

          • Transfer the program to second Micro:bit
