For a 2-day boardgame jam in DAE, my team and I adapted an existing videogame into a board game. We decided to go with Rain World; a 2D survival game where you have to navigate a complex ecosystem.
In the board game version, we made Rain World into a cooperative turn-based game. This was done by dissecting the mechanics of the original video game and iterating on them so that they would work in a board game setting. We also compared to similar board games, to see how the game could be made more fun. Extensive playtesting was required to get the feel that we wanted.
The end goal is for all players to complete their objectives, before the deadly rain comes in!
