The practice of the management of people undergoing transformation remains vital in determining the extent to which societies can deal with external environmental shocks. In a world in which external shocks are increasingly and obviously dangerous to the well-being of societies, for example the coronavirus pandemic, global climate change and deglobalisation, the role of people in creating resilience and responsiveness is vital. Yet people cannot play their part in this process unless properly mobilised, motivated and empowered. They need to be part of transformations that bring about the application of solutions to global problems in ways that feature the application of intelligence, broadly defined.
Researchers in this cluster investigate the human element in meeting global challenges and the national and sub-national level, with particular emphasis on the connections between sub-national units (e.g. cities and provinces) across borders. While it is important to be aware of the technological components of such connections, it is considered that the management and development of people and their capacities that will continue to be the dominant factor.
