Randolph-Macon Wind Ensemble
& Symphony Orchestra
Founded 2023
The Randolph-Macon College Wind Ensemble & Symphony Orchestra were founded in 2023 after five years of growth as a mixed-instrumentation flexible chamber orchestra. These two new, separate ensembles are the campus musical home for woodwind, brass, string, and percussion musicians. RMWE & RMSO perform both classic and cutting-edge wind literature and are major contributors to pushing the boundaries of wind band repertoire and performance practice. RMSO was honored with the American Prize Foundation's 2020 Vytautas Marijosius Memorial Award for Orchestral Programming, a national juried award that "recognizes and rewards the best achievement in the unique field of orchestral programming." RMWE musicians showcased their nimble creativity in action on the national stage when they were honored with the invitation to perform at the College Band Directors National Association’s 2022 Southern Division Conference in Columbia, SC.
RMWE & RMSO are committed to expanding the instrumental canon and performing repertoire that reflects our students and our community. Since the program’s inception in 2018, the Randolph Macon College Instrumental Music Program has commissioned and premiered numerous new works by composers including Omar Thomas, Allison Loggins-Hull, Michael Gandolfi, JoAnne Harris, and Kimberly Archer, with new works coming from Evan Williams, Zac Cairns, Olivia Kieffer, and Shuying Li.
