What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) using the Vodder technique is a gentle, rhythmic therapy designed to stimulate the flow of lymph — the body’s natural fluid responsible for removing waste, toxins, and excess fluid from tissues. Through light, precise movements that follow the anatomical pathways of the lymphatic system, this technique encourages fluid balance, reduces swelling, and supports immune system function. MLD also aids tissue recovery after surgery or injury by enhancing circulation and promoting optimal healing conditions.
MLD is beneficial for individuals seeking to reduce mild swelling, improve recovery, and support general wellness. It is particularly effective for:
Pre- and post-surgical clients (typically 4–6 weeks post-operation, with medical clearance) to minimize swelling, support scar healing, and enhance comfort.
Sinus congestion, allergies, or chronic headaches related to fluid buildup.
Post-illness or post-travel sluggishness when the body feels “heavy” or stagnant.
Minor swelling or inflammation following soft tissue strain or inactivity.
Clients focusing on overall immune and detoxification support.
Clients with general fatigue or poor lymphatic circulation
MLD differs significantly from traditional massage. Instead of using pressure to release muscle tension, the Vodder technique targets the superficial lymphatic vessels just below the skin. The pressure is intentionally light and rhythmic to stimulate lymphatic flow without compressing the delicate structures. Sessions follow a specific sequence that clears central drainage areas before working on localized regions, helping the body process fluid more efficiently. The result is gentle yet effective — promoting relaxation, improved tissue health, and reduced swelling without post-session soreness.
Each session begins with a short intake to review your health history and ensure MLD is appropriate for your condition and goals.
Treatment involves slow, structured hand movements following lymphatic flow patterns — typically starting at the neck and trunk to open drainage pathways before addressing other areas. The experience is calming and non-invasive, often leaving clients feeling lighter and more balanced. For post-surgical clients, adjustments are made according to the stage of healing, and you may be taught simple self-drainage techniques to enhance your results between visits. Mild tiredness or increased urination after a session is normal as the lymphatic system becomes more active.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage at the Level 1 Vodder certification is designed for general wellness, pre- and post-surgical recovery, and mild fluid imbalances. However, certain conditions require care from a Certified Lymphedema Therapist (CLT) or Vodder-Certified MLD/CDT Specialist, who has advanced medical training in complex lymphatic disorders.
You should seek an advanced practitioner if you have:
Active or recent cancer (without physician clearance)
Lymphedema or lipedema
History of lymph node removal or radiation
Active infection, fever, or inflammatory condition
Congestive heart failure
Acute deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or known blood clots
Severe kidney, liver, or heart disease that impacts fluid regulation
If you’re unsure which level of care you need, a brief consultation can help determine whether MLD at this level is suitable or if referral to a CLT is recommended.
