I was tasked to reflect on how Social Media impacts society using multiple sources and topics. For instance, we had to take a “Am I addicted to Social Media?” quiz to see just how much were impacted personally.
“You're fairly reliant on social media, but there are far worse culprits! Still, it's good to be reminded that UK adults spend an average of 8 hrs 41 mins on screens every day, and 4 hours of that on smartphone apps alone (mainly social media). That's about a third of each day checking apps. Do you need to rethink your social media habits and the amount of time you spend scrolling?”
I would agree with the quiz; the reason I agree is because while I think I am addicted to Social Media; I have made strides in limiting my time using it; especially when I’m around friends or family. However, I do love to doom scroll for hours when I have nothing else to do!
This is a tough question to answer. Part of me feels nostalgic because my generation grew up with social media. Having Myspace was such a cool new thing and really made using the internet more fun. I love being able to share my life with my friends. I have also built my business using social media; since I am in the hair business, people love visual references to your work. I can’t tell you how many clients I’ve gotten just because of my Instagram business page.
On the other hand, I feel that social media has gotten out of hand. I know more than half of the people looking down on their phone in public are scrolling on some social media site. Comparing who has the nicest car or the slimmest waistline. I sometimes with there was a monthly ban for social media use to we can all reconnect and talk to each other and be out in nature!
The lessons I’ve learned by completing this project is that social media isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. I’ve learned that there are positives and negatives to the use of social media and that one should self-monitor their usage. I also learned that there are new and upcoming social media sites that I have never heard of and one day they may be more popular than Facebook!
