The early life of Isaac is unknown. In 1850, many of the Smith family converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and Isaac was baptized on June 12, 1850. After saving enough money, by himself, Isaac began his journey to Utah. Family histories suggest that Isaacs belongs in a single, wrapped handkerchief. He sailed on the Marshfield on April 8, 1854 and arrived in New Orleans, Louisiana, on May 29. The exact company Isaac traveled with is unknown, but he did make it to Utah in 1854.
Isaac Smith marries Sarah Choules on June 1, 1857. In 1860, they moved to Richmond. Later, Isaac's brothers James and William moved to Richmond. In 1871, Sarah died, and after Isaac remarried, he moved his family to Lewiston, Utah.
