James Smith was born Oct 9, 1825 in Burbage, England to Isaac and Charlotte Eagle Smith. James is a Pioneer of Richmond.
The early history of James is unknown. James married Caroline Pike on Oct 21, 1849. Soon after their marriage, they joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Many of James' family also joined the Chruch, and by 1868, James and his family were the only Smiths that had yet to move to Utah. Caroline died in 1856, and James had remarried to Maria Gilbert in 1858.
The Smith family sailed on the Constitution on June 24, 1868 and arrived in New York City, New York on Aug 6.1 They traveled via the constructed Continental Railroad and stopped in Benton, Wyoming. They arrived on Aug 23, and joined the John Gellespie Company to travel the remainder of the distance. They arrived in the Salt Lake Valley on Sep 15, 1868. James' brother, Isaac Smith Jr., had moved to Richmond in 1860, so James moved his family to Richmond.
James Smith died Dec 29, 1902 in Richmond. He was buried in the Richmond Cemetery.
