Before George was born, his family joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The Sharp family moved across Illinois, and about nine of George's siblings, including himself, were born in different settlements in Illinois.
The Sharp family joined the John Taylor Company on May 24, 1860 in Florence, Nebraska, and arrived in the Salt Lake Valley on Sep 17. After their arrival, George worked as a guide and hunter for wagon trains crossing the plains. In 1865, George moved to Richmond to work for John Bair.
