Susanna Elizabeth Preece was born Oct 19, 1863 in Franklin, Idaho to Mark and Eleanor Ellen Comish Preece. Susanna is a Pioneer of Cove.
"The first house I can remember was a little dirt-floored log house of two rooms—one of which was used for a grainery. ... We lived there until father built a new log house with a shingle roof in the year 1869 just before my brother, Francis, was born."
"I had three little brothers, but oh I wanted a sister; and so when the baby sister came I was a proud and happy little girl. But my joy was soon turned to sorrow as our Mother died when the baby was three days old. There were no doctors in those days... Her last words were, 'Be good to the children, Mark.'
"Oh how it rained the day of her funeral. They put us children in Uncle Peter's wagon because it had a cover on it. Some of the relatives wanted to take some of us children, but Father kept us all together except for the baby sister."
Soon after, Susanna's father remarried in 1872. The following year, the Preece family moved to Cove where she learned to work and was schooled.
"The first time I saw Andrew B. Allen to really know how he was, was when my Father sent me over to the 'Widder Allen's' to see if she would let one of her boys help Father in the harvest. She called Andrew and told him to come over and help 'Priest.' Well, we walked back together... I was a very bashful girl."
After dances and letters were spent and sent over the years, Susanna married Andrew Bickmore Allen on Jan 6, 1881 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Susanna is the mother of Ivan S. Allen, who served as the sixth Bishop of the Cove Ward.
In 1891, the Allen family moved to a lot of land in Cove and built a farm. In her later years, Susanna helped to fund the grave markers for many of her family members.
Susanna Elizabeth Preece died July 6, 1953 in Cove. She was buried in the Richmond Cemetery.
