John William Barnett was born May 6, 1861 in Salt Lake City, Utah to John and Eliza Cranage Barnett. John is a Pioneer of Richmond.
John's parents had always wanted a boy but only had girls. After receiving a blessing from a Church official, they gave birth to their first and only son, John William. At a young at, John was moved from Salt Lake City, Utah to Richmond. While in Richmond, he was unable to obtain a higher education but was able to become acquainted with Alice Janet Thomson. John and Alice were married on March 8, 1883 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
John entered the practice of polygamy when marrying Hattie Loenza Merrill on July 16, 1894. They only had two children when the Manifesto of the Church was announced and polygamy was denounced. John continued to live with Alice.
At the request of one of his children, John moved to San Francisco, California. John William Barnett died Nov 7, 1930 in San Francisco, California. He was buried in the Richmond Cemetery.
