Warwick's Goddard Memorial Park is the home of over 18 miles of bridle trails. However, the equestrians do not get these trails all to themselves; these paths are an oasis for runners.
The park offers soft trails of mulch, sand and pine needles that provide the perfect amount of cushion. The occasional rocks and tree roots create a challenging course. The course includes many forks as it splits into different paths, and it varies in elevation like a roller coaster. It veers left and right around sharp turns, eventually rejoining itself.
The trail winds in and out of the woods, through towering trees and thick shrubbery. The park serves as a home to an entire ecosystem of wildlife, including chipmunks and birds, which inhabit the trails.
Near the coast, the trails parallels Greenwich cove, where there is fishing and boat launches. A portion is a family-friendly public beach.
During the fall months, cross country teams utilize Goddard Park's trails and fields for their 5k races. Hundreds of high school athletes eagerly line up in the park's vast green fields to wait for the gun. The herd funnels into the narrow wooded paths and moves through the shade as a single entity. The challenging hills and terrain challenge the runners during the 3.1 mile courses. Multiple courses exist in the park, most notably the East and West courses.
Overall, Goddard Park provides a friendly, inclusive environment for runners of all ages and skill levels. It's variety of scenery and terrain maintain's an exciting experience.
