To begin, the Cumberland Monastery Trails have a rich historical background. Once inhabited by an order of Cistercian Monks, the old monastery building still stands. Around it lies the town's public library.
Fast forward to today: the Cumberland Monastery Park is most widely known for its running and hiking trails. The surrounding land is complete with unmarked trails that twist through grassy meadows and wooded areas. The trails are famous for being adorned with a rainbow of wildflowers.
The trails consist of firm dirt, moss, and the occasional patch of gravel. As runners travel past the remains of the monastic community, they can truly feel the spirituality in the air.
Unbeknownst to most runners, they are trekking over pure history: the nine soldiers buried right under their feet back in 1676. If you venture off the path, you may come across the Nine Men's Misery Monuments, the soldiers' grave markers. They mark the oldest veterans memorial in the country.
The Cumberland Monastery Trails are the ideal place to observe our state's history, admire nature, and relfect on oneself.
