Narragansett's Black Point Trail is a hidden gem, tucked between the shores of Scarborough and Narragansett Town Beach. The four mile trail features an assortment of terrains, environments and views. Beginning from the parking area on Ocean Road, the trail begins in a wooded area. The path consists of dirt, scattered with loose rocks and patches of sparse grass.
As runners approach the ocean, the path escapes the trees and follows the coastline. A salty breeze welcomes its guests. The trails includes gentle rolling hills, ravines, and curving edges.
Runners can find people fishing on the massive granite boulders by the water. Children climb the rocks and play in the rippling tidal pools, which are inhabited by small fish, crabs, and snails. The boulders are an ideal spot to take a break during a run, and the trail has convenient exit points so that runners can join the fun.
The brief trail ends at Scarborough State Beach, a family-friendly summer spot. The remnants of a stone house lies at the end of the trail. The structure has been encroached by the seaside greenery, and it beckons its visitors to explore the inside. The reason behind its destuction remains unknown, and it leaves the reader to speculate whether fire or hurricane led it to its current state.
The Black Point Trail consists of looping paths that reunite with one another in many places. As such, runners and hikers can tailor the length and duration of their runs. Also, a person can begin at either end: the beach or the woods. For these reasons, the trail is highly adaptable for people of all ages and abilities.
