While it may appear archaic in when such programs as AutoCAD and SolidWorks are considered, hand drafting is the basic foundation of any CADD program that an engineer will use. Without the basic skills learned drafting by hand, it would be impossible to master the computer programs. Additionally, a piece of paper and a pencil is more flexible than even the best computer program. While CADD is certainly more precise and allows rapid creation of finished engineering drawings, the rough draft will remain the domain of paper. A knowledge of hand drafting thus allows an engineer to precisely and rapidly transfer ideas from their mind onto paper, which is the crucial first step in any design process.Â
