RESEARCH PROJECT OVERVIEW
Lightweight high entropy alloys (HEAs) are of great interest since they combine high strength with relatively low density making them suitable for a variety of applications. This research is an attempt to determine the mechanical properties and microstructure of Zr1.2V0.8NbTi3.6Al0.6. This alloy has been shown to have a high degree of toughness as a result of the ratio of aluminum (Al) to titanium (Ti). EDS measured the chemical composition of the sample while EBSD analysis confirmed the alloy to be characterized by large grains with a variety of unit cell orientations. Mechanical characterization was done using a 2D-DIC technique. EDS analysis revealed that the sample was closer to ZrV1.15Nb1.55Ti4.65Al1.20. EBSD analysis showed the grain sizes to be large with varying orientations. Stress-strain analysis showed the material to be almost purely brittle with no plasticity and yield strength of around 200 MPa.Â
