Biological

Biological threats to New Zealand are significant. These include both economic, environmental and human health threats.

Threats to

Human health

• Natural H5N1 Avian Influenza
• Natural Sudden acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and related airborne pathogens (e.g Covid-19)

Human health and economic

• Biological weapon. This list is US focused. The Soviet Union had a major programme.

Economic

• Foot and Mouth is a threat to dairy, beef, wool and sheep meat exports

Most biohazards are handled by the Ministry of Health or Ministry of Primary Industries. Defence can assist with transport, reconnaissance, policing and manpower.
