Callbacks!
Thank you to everyone who auditioned for us this week! We were blown away by the quality of the auditions. It was clear that everyone worked hard to prepare. Thank you.
Callbacks are an opportunity for performers to read, sing and dance to materials from the show. It is an opportunity for each performer to play the role(s) for which they are called back. I have included an audition schedule and links to the songs and scenes that performers should prepare for each character for which they are called back.
Callback Tips: While it is not required that performers memorize the songs and scenes, it is my experience that those who do take the time to memorize and become very familiar with the callback materials are the most prepared and most likely to be cast in their desired roles. A helpful way to memorize lyrics and lines is to write them out by hand and divide them into smaller sections. Memorize each section independently and then string them together and/or add music.
Callback Materials: All callback materials are available on google drive. They are organized in folders by character. Please visit the Audition Sides Folder, find the folder with the name of the character(s) for which you are called back, open the folder and find the materials needed. The music can be found in the Guide Vocals - Songs with Lyrics Only folder.
Matilda/Miss Honey Crossover - If a performer is called back for BOTH Matilda and Miss Honey, they may choose to learn one of the songs for one of those characters rather than both songs. If you feel comfortable learning both, you may still learn both.
Callback Schedule: Please look closely at the schedule. Performers may be called back for multiple roles. If that is the case, they should plan on arriving and staying during any time block for which those characters are called. It is possible that there will be some down time between callback blocks. Please bring something to keep you busy. Thanks!

If you have a conflict with any or your scheduled callback times, please let us know as soon as possible. If you do not attend callbacks and do not contact us to let us know of a conflict, it will be assumed that you are no longer interested in participating in this show and you will not be cast.

Casting Philosophy
No roles are pre-cast and all actors enter auditions with equal opportunity.
Casting will be based on talent, audition preparation, experience and availability. It is a lot of work to put on a musical. Not only is attendance and participation at rehearsals required but practicing singing, dancing, and acting outside of scheduled rehearsals will be key to learning all of the material needed to put on this show.
Kate Kingery and Claudine Pruitt will be running auditions and callbacks, and making all casting decisions.
Casting decisions are final.
Audition Information
Thank you to everyone who filled out the interest form and expressing interest in auditioning for or participating with backstage crew of Matilda, The Musical, Jr at RES this year. We are beyond thrilled by the number of performers and crew interested in our upcoming production!
For those of you who indicated an interest in performing, we will assign each of you a 30 minute time block for auditions. The assigned times will be posted and emailed after the interest form closes on this Friday, September 15th. The time blocks will be based on your responses. Please let us know right away if you have a conflict with your assigned block.
In the meantime, we wanted to reach and share what we would like you to prepare for the auditions.
Audition Requirements:
Please prepare a song including a verse and a chorus or 32 bars in a style similar to the music in the show 1-2 minutes AND prepare a short monologue, poem, or story that is 1 minute or less.
You may bring your own accompaniment or karaoke backup track on a mobile device or sing acapella (without music). If you prefer, you may email a copy of or link to your accompaniment to the director, Kate Kingery (katekingery@gmail.com), before auditions. A speaker will be provided.
We highly recommend that you read the synopsis of Matilda The Musical Jr and listen to the songs with lyrics only BEFORE the initial auditions. You can find the synopsis and the music on the Music & Synopsis section of this website.
What to Expect:
At the beginning of your assigned time, we will welcome you onto the stage to meet our director Kate Kingery and assistant director Claudine Pruitt. You will then be asked to wait offstage and called onto the stage one at a time to present your song and monologue, story, or poem. Kate and Claudine will ask some follow up questions to get to know you a little bit better. You will be asked which roles you are interested in playing. Please take time to consider this in advance. Once you have completed your individual audition, you are free to go.
We will be taking a photo of each person who auditions to ensure that we recognize everyone by name. These photos will not be saved or used for anything after auditions and callbacks. Please let someone know if you don't want your photo taken.
Please arrive 5 minutes before your time block is scheduled to begin.
