Bulletin Boards can be a really influential part of residents’ experiences when living in the halls! They can be used to build community or to inform students about important topics. Seeing as they pass by them each day, possibly multiple times a day, we want to make sure they are top notch and something they can spend time looking at and gaining information from. Below are a few guides to help ensure that Bulletin Boards are “resident ready.” All outdoor bulletin boards should include only laminated flyers or information.
Appearance:
Be covered with butcher block paper, with no cork board showing. Edges should be smooth, not look ripped, and be covered by a border.
Information should be organized in an order that is easy to follow.
Think of your color combinations ahead of time so that when it comes together, it is aesthetically pleasing.
Again, all materials used, with the exception of butcher block paper and borders should be laminated if outdoors.
You should not be writing the information on your board with a marker. Use dye cuts or type it out. If you have great, big, neat handwriting and want to write on your board, seek approval from the Director of Residence Life.
Content:
Think of the topic you want to cover and how best to convey the information
Include prevalent, up to date information that provides students with resources should they want to learn more or follow up
Keep all audiences in mind and be as inclusive with your messaging as possible (e.g. if you’re doing a safe sex board, think of all populations)
Creativity:
Get creative with presentation of topics. Sometimes the things we want to make boards on might not be the most exciting, but there are always ways to spice it up.
Feel free to use online resources for ideas to help you out.
Timeliness:
Bulletin Boards should be done and posted by the dates below:

About Me Board: Should include information about you that you would want your residents to know! Since each floor/building typically only has 1 bulletin board, this should only be up through opening until your first floor bulletin board is due.
Floor Board: These are the informational/educational boards that you will change each month - please reference dates mentioned above.
Community Bulletin Boards: These are bulletin boards in the lobby or breezeway of most building that are assigned as collaterals - not all buildings have a community board. They should include monthly events, important information/announcements, and educational components.
Door Decs are a fun and personal way to welcome residents, create a sense of belonging, and build community from day one. They’re often the first thing students notice when entering their new home, so a little creativity goes a long way!
Appearance:
Door Decs should be neat, well-crafted, and securely attached to the door. Avoid using materials that easily tear or fall off. Laminated or cardstock designs are preferred for durability. Be mindful of how your decs reflect your floor’s vibe and consider using names clearly and legibly.
Creativity:
Have fun with themes—pop culture, seasonal ideas, motivational messages, or campus spirit are all great directions! Residents appreciate personalized touches, and creative designs can become conversation starters. Online platforms like Pinterest can be great sources of inspiration.
Timeliness:
Door Decs should be completed and posted before resident move-in and updated at least once per semester. They should also be refreshed if they become worn or if a new resident moves in mid-semester.
Inclusivity:
Choose themes that are welcoming to all students. Avoid references that may not resonate with or could alienate members of your community. Everyone should feel like their door dec reflects a warm, inclusive environment.
