Liverpool v Manchester City. 12th October 2025.
By Hatty Ruddick
In exactly a year since Manchester City last played Liverpool at Anfield, they are back. In the first time that the visitors will come against former manager Gareth Taylor, the visitors will be hoping to retain second place after United's win at the other end of Liverpool. City are still without Hemp and Kerolin but will be hoping to keep Liverpool without their first point this season. Liverpool need this win as they have not gained a single point and now at game week 6 this is a problem for Taylor. Notably two players from City's next gen squad are on the sub bench today Oldroyd and Shikhshabekova.
Starting 11 for Liverpool: Evans, Fisk, Kapocs, Nagano, Borggrafe, Enderby, Höbinger, Clark, Holland, Bonner, Kerr
Starting 11 for Manchester City: Rose, Greenwood, Beney, Shaw, Miedema, Ouhabi, Casparij, Blindkilde Brown, Fujino, Hasegawa, Yamashita
City dominate the first few minutes with a 2 minute attempt from Blindkilde Brown going wide. Liverpool are called to defend early with Evans and Bonner both having to clear attempts from Beney and Miedema. This needs to be a strategy for Liverpool looking at City's play so far this match as they are looking to score and score big. Fisk's defence in the early minutes should also be commended against WSL top scorer Miedema. The second chance comes again from Miedema but goes over. The first time the home side look to be in the game is at 14 minutes with Enderby making a run for it, however Greenwood quickly ends the chance. Höbinger gives a second chance with an impressive run opening the opportunity for Kapocs until Yamashita saves. In what looks like an awful knee injury for Höbinger she is brought off by medics in tears and replaced with Maclean. Liverpool so far have done well to keep City at bay haven't blocked numerous attempts from Shaw, Miedema, Casparij and Beney. It does feel that City will keep going for this goal as they dominate on the statistics.
In what felt like a scrappy first half, it remains goalless at 45 minutes. Liverpool excelled in their defence, and City need to find a way to break through. However, Liverpool also need to create chances.
With no changes at the break, the first real chance of the second half is Enderby's as Yamashita saves and Shaw clears the corner. And it is Liverpool that break the deadlock with a top bins for Kapocs. In what is Liverpool's first goal since Game Week 1.
Liverpool 1 - 0 Manchester City
City don't come back with grace as Greenwood gets a yellow for a foul on Enderby. Beney then gives away a corner for a foul on Holland. City make the change of Miedema off for Coombs. However, City are not behind for long with a goal from Beney. A good rebound from Shaw's saved shot.
Liverpool 1 - 1 Manchester City
In another harsh looking injury Holland receives off pitch treatment after a clash with Coombs. She returns to play. Change for City, Blindkilde Brown is off for Lohmann. However, with 3 minutes to go it looks like City will take the three points with a goal from Fujino.
Liverpool 1 - 2 Manchester City
In a last ditch attempt at equalising, Kerr leaves the pitch for Roman Haug. City do the same and swap Ouahabi for Layzell. With 30 seconds to go, Liverpool are given a free kick for a foul on Nagano. The free kick rebounds but Bonner gets it in. However, the goal is disallowed.
As City faced their previous manager for the first time they took their time to do it, but they kept their winning streak and denied Liverpool of any points yet again. Liverpool can be proud of their play in this game with some of the strongest defence City has come up against this season.
Manchester City v Liverpool, WSL, 16.02.25

After loosing their last 2 home WSL matches, the home side welcome their Merseyside rivals who are at kick off seventh in the table. In all competitions, Manchester City have beat Liverpool for this season so far and last. Liverpool will be looking for revenge today. Both teams have been hit heavily with injury. Manchester City will be looking to start Shaw who scored both games in the last match against Liverpool, as well as Layzell- who has been missed in recent matches, but will be missing Casparij who is out on concussion protocol. For Liverpool, Fahey, Silcock and Smith were out last game- fans will be awaiting to see if they are back tonight at the Joie.
City Starting 11: Yamashita, Aleixandri, Miedema, Fowler, Roord, Ouahabi, Fujino, Shaw, Hasegawa, Knaak, Prior.
Liverpool Starting 11: Micah, Parry, Evans, Fisk, Kiernan, Haug, Hinds, Hobinger, Clark, Holland, Kerr.
City make the first 4 minutes their own, bringing the ball to their goal, but Liverpool expect this and remain strong in their defence. Micah comes to Liverpool's rescue at 6 minutes after Fujino reminds us just how much she is the youngster to be watching this season. Roord and Hasegawa come remarkably close to both scoring in quick succession, but Liverpool's defence keeps them off the score sheet. Liverpool's defence at the early stages of this game should be commended. Micah manages to fend off Shaw perfectly. The same cannot be said for City who came close to giving away a goal to Holland had it not been off target. This is redeemed by 19 year old Prior who keeps Kiernan at bay.
An offside attempt by Kiernan is allowed to continue until Yamashita clears the attempt and knocks her over. The Liverpool corner is cleared. Arguably Yamashita did give away a penalty, however the it can be argued that as the offside was looked over, as was the penalty.
After 30 minutes, City are on the score sheet. A strong goal by Shaw who has made her first start since return from injury.
Manchester City 1 - 0 Liverpool.
The attempts continue to come, until the final minutes of the first half. Fowler goes to break a WSL record with a second assist to Shaw's second goal. Fowler is the first WSL player to have two goal contributes in four consecutive WSL games. It has been great to see her confidence grow so rapidly this season.
Manchester City 2 - 0 Liverpool.
No changes at half-time for either side.
Shaw has twice had chances in this second half so far. Once where Fujino missed the ball to her, second where she was called offside. She is going for this hattrick. Miedema has her attempt, but is pushed off target by Micah. Unfortunately for Liverpool where they are succeeding in defence tonight, there have been no attempts on goal. It isn't long until the third goal comes and it's Roord's. She has needed this goal, after having a dry spell.
Manchester City 3 - 0 Liverpool.
Changes for City. Shaw is off and her chances of a hattrick gone. Park comes on.
Change for Liverpool. Kerr and Kiernan off. Nagano and Enderby on.
Liverpool have their first shot on target 70 minutes in for captain Hinds. A great ball, saved by Yamashita.
Change for City. Miedema is off for Blindkilde Brown. During the change, Micah is attended to by medics.
Change for Liverpool. Evans off for Kapocs.
Micah is okay to continue.
A fantastic night for youngster Prior. Her first senior goal comes as a surprise to even her as it was intended as a cross- but a fantastic one at that!
Manchester City 4 - 0 Liverpool.
A yellow card is shown to Holland for an off challenge.
As Fowler is attended to by medics, changes for Liverpool. Holland and Parry off for Shaw and Bonner.
Changes for City. Hasegawa, Fujino and Fowler off for Oyama, Murphy and Kerolin.
Liverpool try to enter the score sheet at 84 minutes until Yamashita clears, she repeats this 2 minutes later and then again in the subsequent corner.
Kerolin almost makes it 5 as she hits the post, just as 6 minutes of additional time is called.
An overall great night for City who have bounced back from a low point of the season.
Manchester City 4 - 0 Liverpool

Liverpool Women v Manchester City women 13.10.24 WSL
Hatty Ruddick
With both teams currently being undefeated this season, this is an important game for both of the Northern teams, particularly as Liverpool are on 5 points and City are on 7. Last season, however, Manchester City beat Liverpool 3 times across all competitions. Despite being an early game, this could be a title deciding game.
Starting 11 for Liverpool: Laws, Parry, Clark, Bonner, Matthews, Hinds, Vagano, Hobinger, Kapocs, Smith and Roman H.
Starting 11 for City: Yamashita, Aleixandri, Greenwood, Fowler, in her first start since her ACL Roord, Hemp, Ouahabi, Park, Casparij, Shaw and Hasegawa.
In the early minutes of the game, City start as they mean to go on and dominate possession. Hemp tried to get City on the score board within the first 3 minutes, however went wide. This is a continued pattern in the first few minutes, however the Liverpool defence are too strong. City seem to then lose their confidence with Liverpool continuing to press and make attempts, and not giving City's back line chance to catch up. However, Liverpool's attempts are still falling short. Smith goes down at 17 minutes, winning a free kick for Liverpool. The passes from this free kick lead to City being awarded a corner at 23 that Fowler takes. Smith then quickly goes down again with medics coming on. She is up after a minute.
The medics coming on gives City time to regroup, with Hemp taking another attempt that goes wide. She then performs a nasty tackle on Parry that wins Liverpool a free kick. This starts a chain of events allowing Smith to score at 41 minutes. Liverpool 1-0. Smith immediately goes down after scoring and medics come on. While she does continue to play, she needs to be a consideration for substitution at half-time. Even with 4 minutes added time, City are underperforming. Whether they are just not focused or they are tired from the mid-week win against Barcelona. Taylor needs to consider rotation at half-time.
Half-time. Liverpool 1 - 0 City.
Only one change at 45 minutes with Liverpool rightly swapping Smith for Enderby. Suprisingly, no changes for the away side. There is much frustration in the away fan side with City having many opportunties, but not taking chances. Liverpool then have three corners within three minutes, none of which translate into goals. Frustration continues with Yamashita taking a considerable amount of time on goal kicks. City are playing a world away from how they did on Wednesday. Liverpool continue to make attempts at 54 and 57, that do not succeed. However, in what felt like an accidental goal, Bunny scores at 57 minutes. Liverpool 1 - 1 City. Medics are brought on for Laws, who is back up quickly.
The goal has brought confidence to City who are now playing faster and are starting to finally make some attempts. This is now a changed game, with the second half now being repeated attempts for City. At 64 minutes, Hobinger commits a foul, which wins her a yellow card and City a free kick. This adds to City's confidence, they are now exciting to watch, and Liverpool are reactive. A foul on Greenwood at 68 minutes wins City another free kick. After attempts by Park and Fowler, Bonner goes down with a leg injury and medics are on. She is quickly subbed along with Kapocs for Fahey and Kiernan. Along with changes with City as Fowler is off and Fujino is on.
In another injury for Liverpool, Laws is down after a City attempt with what looks to be a head injury. Medics are brought on, but again she is quickly up.
After repeated attempts that do not translate by City, all the injuries add up to 7 minutes of added time. Within 2 minutes the attempts pay off and Bunny scores. Liverpool 1 - 2 City. Liverpool bring the medics on yet again, and are quickly playing again. After a contentious corner for City and a scuffle between 5 players, Shaw is awarded a yellow for arguing with the ref in the final seconds of the match.
A frustrating match for all, that eventually pays off for City. Liverpool 1 - 2 City.
