By Hatty Ruddick
Following their win at home against Liverpool mid-week, Aston Villa travel to Manchester to face table leaders Manchester City on the game that they welcome back their captain onto the sub bench Greenwood and for stand-in captain Casparij's 100th game.
Manchester City starting 11: Yamashita, Casparij, Rose, Knaak, Ouahabi, Blindkilde Brown, Hasegawa, Fujino, Miedema, Hemp, Shaw
Aston Villa starting 11: D'Angelo, Maritz, Patten, Parker, Grant, Taylor, Kendall, Maltby, Hijikata, Daly, Hanson.
City mae a strong attempt from the get go with Hemp showing her dominance on the ball against Maritz, but not translating. Yamashita is quickly pulled into action also, but again does not translate. City's defense starts to leave something to be desired as Villa have multiple attempts on goal in the first 10 minutes. With both teams coming close to scoring in the first quarter, but Aston Villa dominating attempts, City need to step up to show why they are at the top of the table. Regardless of results this weekend, City will go into the new year as table leaders. However, that time comes for Shaw who scores at 36 minutes, getting her 100th City goal- the first City women's professional player to do so.
Manchester City 1 - 0 Aston Villa
She soon after gets a second goal to finish the first half.
Manchester City 2 - 0 Aston Villa
Change at the beginning of the second half, Maltby replaced by Tomas.
Two further changes are made, Hanson is off for Mullett and Hijikata is off for Kearns.
Knaak is shown the yellow for a bad foul and in more bad news Miedema makes what looks like City's third goal after an exciting battle in the penalty box between teams, however, the goal is disallowed for being offside/ However, Fujino does make it three seconds later.
Manchester City 3 - 0 Aston Villa.
Three changes for City, Greenwood and Kerolin make their returns for Hemp and Ouahabi and Clinton is on for Blindkilde Brown. However, Villa enter the score sheet with Parker making it 3-1.
Just after two subs, goal scorer Parker is off for Deslanders, Kendall is off for Staniforth.
Manchester City 3 - 1 Aston Villa.
However, City bring back their lead, with a goal from Miedema.
Manchester City 4 - 1 Aston Villa.
After being attended to by medics, Fujino is off for Beney. Beney looks to score, but is caught offside in the last 10 minutes.
However, City secure this match with a hattrick for Shaw, just before taking off Miedema for Lohmann.
Manchester City 5 - 1 Aston Villa.
A last minute goal for City comes from Shaw again who gets 4 goals in one game!
Manchester City 6 - 1 Aston Villa.
While a slow start for the home team, Manchester City finish strong with a stand out match for Shaw and remaining strongly at the top of the league with Villa remaining at 8th.
Manchester United v Aston Villa. 8th November 2025
By Hatty Ruddick
3rd in the table Manchester United host 7th in the table Aston Villa at home today. United so far this season being undefeated whereas Villa are coming back of a number of games with draws- including a draw with Arsenal. United are the front runners coming into this match having won 11 out of 15 meets and only having lost 1.
United starting 11: Tullis-Joyce, George, Le Tissier, Toone, Park, Terland, Rolfö, Riviere, Naalslund, Janssen, Miyazawa
Villa starting 11: D'angelo, Patten, Kearns, Wilms, Maritz, Mullett, Hanson, Kendall, Grant, Deslandes, Taylor
Villa's defence of Deslandes, Patten and Wilms is keen to impress today with a strong attempt from Park at 8 minutes being diverted and continued attempts being blocked in the first ten minutes. A fantastic run comes from Hanson who passes to Mullett and pulls Tullis-Joyce into action. While attempts are coming from both teams and both teams are looking fairly equal- United were lucky there. However, after a corner and a scramble at 35 minutes, Taylor gets the goal for the visitors after Tullis-Joyce leaves goal.
Manchester United 0 - 1 Aston Villa
3 minutes later captain Kearns wins the free kick just outside the penalty box, but Rivere clears.
Triple change for United with Galton, Malard and Sandberg coming on for Terland, George and Rolfö. Galton makes an impact at 59 minutes with an attempt saved by D'angelo. Malard looks certain to score when D'angelo knocks the ball out. Medics are on the pitch for both D'angelo and Wilms when they lash with each other. Daly comes on during the break for Mullett. Zigotti is on for Naalsund. Both Wilms and D'angelo are okay to continue.
United are persistent in trying to score, but Villa's defense is proving strong today. Grant is swapped off for Mayling. Park is off for Williams in the last 10 minutes. Williams looks to change United's fate, however D'angelo stops her. Last minute swap in added time. Hanson off for Salmon.
Villa hand United their first loss of the season with one goal.
Aston Villa v Manchester City, WSL, 25.01.25

In Villa's last match with interim manager Shaun Goater, they hope to break their record of loosing to Manchester City at home today. With Goater's knowledge of his former team and the current injury list of the Away team, this may be possible. So far this season, and last season Villa only played City in the WSL competition and lost all matches. However, things may be looking up for the Midlanders as City are on a WSL loosing streak, dropping to 4th in the table. Villa are currently on a better form having only lost one out of their last five matches in all competitions after the sacking of previous manager Robert De Paw. Today could see the debuts of new signings Kerolin Nicoli and Aemu Oyama, as well as the potential returns of Naomi Layzell and Bunny Shaw for Manchester City. There is a potential debut for new on loan goal keeper Katelin Talbert for the Villains.
Starting 11 for Villa: D'Angelo, Mayling, Patten, Nobbs, Daly, Turner, Leon, Hanson, Baijings, Grant, Pacheco. Talbert is on the bench.
Starting 11 for City: Yamashita, Aleixandri, Miedema, Park, Fowler, Roord, Ouahabi, Casparij, Fujino, Hasegawa, Knaak. Shaw, Oyama, Kerolin and Layzell are on the bench.
City start out with possession. Daly gets her chance to make an early impact but loses it with a slide. Miedema also has a chance going wide. Both teams are trying to make an early impact. Roord has the first real chance, however D'Angelo saves. Villa get the first goal 5 minutes in. Very little defence from City with only Yamashita and Roord. A strong goal from Grant.
Aston Villa 1 - 0 Manchester City
Yamashita is quickly tested again with an attempt from Hanson that goes over. Ouahabi and Fujino have their chance at revenge, but Fujino just misses the opportunity leading to a corner. Fowler has an attempt that is once again saved. She has another opportunity, but goes over. City need to start being more focused in the box if they hope to gain any points today. Attempt after attempt come for City that is either off-target or saved. Taylor must make some decisions here. The Villains are doing well keeping the Champions League side at bay, despite City dominating on shots made, possession and successful crosses.
Casparij goes down for the second time this half, winning a second free kick. She is quickly up, but this should be in great position for a goal. Fowler kicks it directly into D'Angelo's hands. It's equal! Miedema proves why she is the WSL goals record holder.
Aston Villa 1 - 1 Manchester City
She does it again! Miedema is going for the hattrick so soon after recovery. A long kick into the top corner of the goal. City are going for their first WSL win in three matches.
Aston Villa 1 - 2 Manchester City
There is real concern about Daly. She continually has been falling in this half and then in a very light tackle with Roord has medics on. She is back on, but needs to be watched closely. Roord almost makes it 3 with a header into goal that goes wide. Daly once again is on the floor for seconds, this time winning a free kick. Leon also goes down just at the 45 mark winning another free kick with a direct line to the goal. Miedema, Knaak and Casparij clear.
A real star player in this half was Chasity Grant who has made fantastic, speedy runs, scored the opening goal and found great spaces. For such a young player in this half she has made a great impact. However, Miedema has proven why she is world-class. This is a great game for the Dutch national side.
No changes for either side.
Villa once again start the half with an early goal. However, it is actually City captain Aleixandri that put it in the net. A very clumsy mistake from the Spanish international.
Aston Villa 2 - 2 Manchester City.
Medics are on for Pacheco with a leg injury. She will not continue to play.
Fowler gets her goal that she has been trying for all match. A great goal to forgive for her team's earlier own goal. Fowler has needed that goal after a number of games taking on the role of striker and not getting it. She has proved critics wrong today.
Aston Villa 2 - 3 Manchester City
Change for Villa, Pacheco off for Tomas. It would be an idea to take Daly off too who is looking in pain.
Villa try to equalise, but Ouahabi stops them in their tracks.
Park strengthens the lead, making her case for a starting position in this year's Euros.
Aston Villa 2 - 4 Manchester City
Changes for Villa. Leon off for Salmon. Baijings off for Taylor.
Aleixandri makes it up to her team and wins a free kick directly in front of goal. Roord takes. It doesn't materialise.
Changes for City. Bunny Shaw is back and Kerolin makes her debut. Miedema and Fujino off.
Changes for Villa, Parker and Maritz are in for Mayling and Turner.
In her first run for City, Kerolin is called off-side, leading the way for Villa to make a run. Casparij clears. Two grrat attempts that are saved. One from Hanson and one from Roord. This match remains exciting. This is a very different Villa than the team that went to the Joie in October.
Another debut for City. Oyama is on for Hasegawa and Blindkilde Brown is on for Roord.
Villa go for the last minute goal with Salmon attempting, but it is saved by Aleixandri.
A sight nobody wanted to see. Shaw who came back from injury 10 minutes ago is already on the floor. She continues to play after the ref checks on her.
Villa get their literally last minute goal, however it is offside and called off side.
Aston Villa 2 - 4 Manchester City
Manchester City v Aston Villa 20.10.24 WSL
Hatty Ruddick
In a match that is important for both teams in terms of table rankings, the midlands meets the north. With City being 3rd in the table and Aston Villa being 9th, both teams need a win. Last season in the meetings, City won both WSL games, whilst Villa won the FA cup meet. However, this season, City are undefeated, whereas Villa only have one win to their name in the league cup. This is a must win for both sides, particuarly for new Aston Villa manager Robert De Pauw. It can be argued that an Aston Villa team with talent in such as Rachel Daly, Missy Bo Kearns, Jordan Nobbs and Katie Robinson should be higher than 9th in the table.
City starting 11: Yamashita, Aleixandri, Greenwood, Fowler, Roord, Hemp, Ouahabi, Park, Casparij, Shaw, Hasegawa.
Villa starting 11: D'Angelo, Maritz, Parker, Patten, Turner, Nobbs, Kearns, Robinson, Hanson, Nunes, Daly.
City start with early possession. Villa need to be careful in the early few minutes as D'Angelo has had the ball in the box far more than she would like in the first 4 minutes. Both teams are having good runs to the box, but neither have been able to make an attempt yet, until Shaw's at 8 minutes that goes far too wide. City are being strategic in their passing in a hope to reset for that early goal. Villa are left chasing trying to win back possession. However, currently their defence cannot be questioned as they are preventing City getting onto the score board. Jess Park's confidence in her attempts are strong as she is turning into a real asset for City. The shot was slightly off target allowing Villa to clear it.
Villa have their chance as they quickly bring the ball down the pitch at 14 minutes. Their first real chance, which is cleared by Aleixandri and Greenwood, who have both done well despite the Villa advantage. Shaw tries to claw this back with a direct header into the goal, being saved by D'Angelo. A great save from Villa.
Villa make the first entry to the score sheet at 20 minutes, with a goal that just makes it past Yamashita in a lazy defence by City. The celebrations by Villa do take slightly longer than they should with a minute being given to celebrations and making it back to starting positions. Nunes makes it City 0 - 1 Aston Villa.
City respond by bringing it back to their side. Bunny and Fowler try to push the ball into the box which bounces off D'Angelo. City continue to push, but it is not translating. Hemp has a real chance after a long goal kick from Yamashita that makes it to the other side of the pitch straight to Hemp, but ultimatley bounces off D'Angelo. Hemp goes again, but without a player on the right side to help her out, the ball goes to a corner taken by Hemp. The trio of Roord, Shaw and Hemp need to start gelling together after Roord's long absence.
City are loosing dominance and are letting Villa have too much control of the pitch in terms of letting their game plan play out. Villa have a player on every City player, which is not letting the ball come forward. City are not bringing this ball forward, despite controlling possession. Daly is controlling her team well, and at this time, Aston Villa are the better team. Roord tries to change this and get her first goal of the season, but slides into the goal instead of the ball. City are falling into a habit of taking the ball back instead of pyshing it forward. City have a chance with a free kick won by Hemp, who then goes for an attempt saved by D'Angelo.
Villa go for 2, but Robinson loses the fall through a fall, and City take possession again. This leads to Hemp trying to take the ball forward, but instead going directly into Turner's face. Play continues. Villa are a player down as Nunes falls, rips her own boot off, throws it in the air and takes a while to reset. The ref ignores this and play continues. City fans are not happy with Kirsty Dowle today. Medics come on for Robinson with a leg injury. City need to take this chance to up the energy in the last 5 minutes. Play continues.
With two minutes to go, Hemp wins the free kick, and then Roord wins one a minute later. The significant one is the second taken by Greenwood, which goes directly into D'Angelo's hands.
At the end of the first half, while Villa only had one real opportunity- they turned it into a goal. City have had a half of wasted chances, with Roord and Bunny taking a chance in the 2 minutes of added time that is saved. Taylor must make changes if he hopes to win this match, potentially in midfield. The ball is being lost to the backline in the midfield, who are not pushing forward. Coombs and Blinkilde-Brown need to be considerations for the second half.
Manchester City 0 - 1 Aston Villa
No changes for either side at half-time. A similar pattern of play for both teams in the early minutes of the second half. Again, another frustrating match for City fans like last week at Anfield. Hasegawa tries to change things by swinging the ball to Roord who is in the box, however, she misses the shot. However, Villa are not pushing for their second goal. City need to take advantage or Villa need to start making a press to get a second goal. City have a shot with a free kick that goes to a short pass to Hasegawa from Greenwood. A swing into goal is attempted, but turns into a corner. Fowler takes the corner to Hemp in the box who does not get the ball. Bunny tries to repeat her performance at Anfield, but the ball goes behind the goal. Corner taken by Hemp, which starts a sequence of passing that ends in a Hemp attempt, that again goes behind the goal.
Corner from the Ballon d'or nominee Hemp is cleared. City seem to be endlessly passing in failed attempts, with Villa running around not really seeing much of the ball. City are playing better, but still without reward. A corner by Fowler and attempt by Shaw is cleared by Daly. Hemp goes down before Fowler's next corner. This is followed by D'Angelo going down with medics on. Play continues.
City finally get their goal. Hemp scores at 62 minutes. 1 all.
Villa are finally going for a goal. They were happy to settle for 0-1, but they are not happy for a draw. Changes for Villa. Goal scorer Nunes off for Salmon. Hanson off for Grant. Villa are looking to up the pace with fresh legs, but City are still attacking. Hemp goes the second, but the weather goes against her and she slips on the wet grass.
City win another free kick and still are dominating posession. Villa's changes were positive, but have not allowed for Villa to take more of an attacking play yet. They are still playing defensively. Jill Roord breaks through and gets her first goal since her ACL recovery. City 2 - 1 Villa.
City are pressing for the 3rd, but Villa are trying for their second. Hemp gives the ball away in an attempt, which Hasegawa wins back. Shaw makes an attempt that goes behind the goal. City are now playing with energy, finally. Patten goes down, which is worrying considering her safety mask. However, this does stop Bunny's attempt. She is quickly up. It is a smart play from Patten.
Changes for Villa. Nobbs off for Taylor. Robinson off for Dali.
Yamashita is once again taking her time in goal kicks much to Villa's frustration as they are finally pressing for the goal. Aleixandri is impressive in both her defensive work and her runs today. Despite her lack of goals, she should be player of the match for her contribution to multiple positions today.
In a tackle with Hemp Maritz goes down, but is quickly back up. Free kick to Villa.
Change for City. Park off, Fujino on.
The game continues into the last 5 minutes, with 5 minutes added time. Continued attempts by Hemp and Shaw, but without reward. City win 2 - 1 Villa.
