What is a Parent Coach?
A parent coach is a professional trained to work collaboratively with parents to listen actively without judgment, ask reflective questions and offer suggestions based on current research. The coach generates a coaching climate steeped in hope, positivity and empathy. Solutions to problems are generated through examination of parental values, goals, dreams and tangible action steps. The process is grounded in positivity and focuses on identifying and engaging the strengths of family members.
What is the difference between coaching and counseling?
Coaching focuses on present day challenges and works to empower the client. The coach and client are on “equal” ground and work together to create an optimal home environment. Coaching clients do not require healing, but a fresh perspective and innovative approaches. Counseling is about overcoming past emotional wounds. It focuses on emotional healing that a client needs to overcome a crises or obstacle that is getting in the way of living a productive life.
How does coaching work?
Coaching can take a variety of formats. Most of the time I coach via zoom. However, sessions can take place in person or over the phone. I am flexible, and strive to schedule appointments that meet your demanding schedule.
A full series of coaching sessions is between 8-12 sessions. In the initial session, we begin by discussing the challenges you are facing.
In the second session, we examine the strengths within each family member and reflect upon what is working in the family system as well as explore resources that are available.
In the third session, you articulate your dream or preferred future. What do you want your life to look like when the coaching process is complete?
After that our sessions are characterized by conversations which help you to reflect on your personal and parental values and goals and the strengths of each family member. During each session we will co-collaborate on generating small doable action steps to take to help launch your dream.
Our final session is a celebration of all that has been accomplished, as well as a review of what you have learned about yourself and your family. We will discuss the successful strategies and tools you have implemented and make a sustainable action plan for going forward.
