Reyes is on the edge of thirty, a lone wanderer Goliath in a vast city where sticking out like a sore thumb makes him, ironically enough, of the more common crowd. He towers just above seven feet in height, and appears to others as if he was genetically engineered for war. Technically, they would be correct in this assumption, as Goliaths are a race of notable physical prowess. Occasionally mistaken for a strange-looking orc, Reyes conceals many facets of his identity, including his full appearance, his origins, and his true Goliath name.
Working as a sword for hire (or an axe), he has found a temporary place of respite working as a blacksmith or as a guard within the city. He most commonly accepts positions escorting individuals through the more dangerous areas of the city, temporarily guarding places of business, and the like. He will not accept assassination requests, and has little issue turning down individuals which he does not respect. Reyes lives humbly in the heart of the city near a popular forge, having prior knowledge and experience of the making and repair of grand weapons from his childhood and teenage apprenticeships prior to leaving his clan. His sellsword career began in part as a result of his restlessness, but most pointedly after escorting and accompanying the blacksmith which employed him through the city to establish a deal with a local group of warriors, enduring an attack from almost one dozen men that resulted in the death of over half of them by his hand. His intimidating aura and capabilities with a weapon caught the attention of many throughout the city, their existing respect for his abilities and sense of dignity from his smithing position advertising his hire value. His upbringing as a Goliath instilled within him a strong sense of morality, and despite his frightening stature and professional demeanor, he is a respectful and honest man with respect for those who offer him the same. He does not offer pity easily, but believes in cosmic powers that have an unavoidable effect on the direction of one's life, and especially respects those with a sense of ambition, honor, and moral rectitude. He strongly dislikes those who are dishonest, ignorant, and unmotivated, a result of his background as an exile.
Raised in the frigid and cruel mountain ranges of the greater region of Valle Escarcha, he was birthed into a small Goliath clan which deemed him unworthy of his place when he reached his late teenage years. His smaller than average stature and penchant for disputes with others created a rift between him and the other young men and women of his clan. Due to an incident involving the death of the son of the chieftain, he was wrongfully deemed dangerously incompetent and was publicly persecuted, resulting in the punishment of exile. During a hunting excursion, Reyes, the son of the chief, and two other Goliath youths were approached by a traveling caravan of elven guard. Considering their venture too deep into the mountains, the son of the chief became aggressive with the elven warriors and was attacked and assumed slain as a result, while the rest of the Goliaths fled. Hoping to conceal their failures, the other two young Goliaths sought to lie to the chief and claim that they had killed the elves and left their bodies to decay in the mountains far from their current settlement. Reyes did not agree to this dishonesty, and so the other two conspired to blame the son's death on Reyes by claiming that he was the true aggressor and the son died protecting him. Being outnumbered, when the three arrived back to their camp, the chief was compelled to believe the words of the two other youths and demanded that Reyes pay for his cowardice in exile. His father, a designated lamentor of the clan, was ashamed and compelled to support the decision to banish his own son at this time to avoid further unrest. Seeing this as a transgression not only against his honor, but the honor of his clan, Reyes fled before he could be officially exiled. He swore to rectify his name by gathering evidence of the son of the chief by finding his corpse, but when he went to search for his body, he found nothing but bloodstains on the trees and rocks, the severed right hand of a Goliath, and a trail of large footprints leading away from the settlement and towards the mainland. Then began his search to find the son of the chief and clear his name.
Upon finding himself a nomadic Goliath in the mainlands, he found himself wandering through towns and cities following word-of-mouth rumors regarding another wandering, one-handed Goliath until finding himself in the capital city where he met the city's master blacksmith, an older Orc named Lutar Steel-Bender. He proceeded with his search for the son of the chief, but decided to hone his skills in smithing, weapons, investigation, and more in the meantime through the kindness of his new mentor. Not long after establishing himself in the city, he was approached by a single elven guard passing through who happened to recognize him. The elf told him that his clan was lucky to have survived this long if their youth were so stupid and reckless. Angered, but in reluctant agreement the judgement of character, Reyes told her to leave. She did so, only after telling him this:
"You are smart to have wandered from your clan. Your young 'prince' boasted of his royal status, claiming his right-hand men would defend him until death. When we took his right hand in exchange for taking his disrespect, the three of you fled, and he proclaimed the three of you as would-be king killers. Allege asesinos de reyes, as it were. His disdain was inspiring, and we chose to let him live so he may exact his misguided revenge. I do wonder if he was successful in his efforts, and if he is searching as tirelessly for you as you for him."
Confused at the obvious lies of the son, he attempted to question the elven guard further, but was unsuccessful before she left the city. Experiencing a confusing combination of betrayal, confusion, and frustration, he refused to follow her and instead felt compelled to reconsider the nature of his quest, and if he should be rescuing his old friend, or slaughtering a liar and a fraud. Lutar questioned the interaction and the mysterious past of his new assistant. Unwilling to relent that story at the time, Lutar instead simply asked for his full name in place of referring to him as "Goliath", to which he replied:
"I am Garian Asesino de Reyes Kulumalathi, exile of clan Escarchagiano."
The nickname Reyes was adopted by Lutar and the rest of the city afterwards, which much to Reyes' chagrin, stuck as his ironic identifying title.
Valle de Escarcha is far from a lawless region, but can be cruel to those who are weak. Reyes is a firm believer in honor and integrity as part of his traditioanl upbringing in Goliath culture, and fits into the greater culture of the land quite well. His misfortunes, however, have made him particularly susceptible to rage at the commonplace behaviors of selfishness, dishonesty, thievery, and more that plague the land. He is not much aware of other traditions and behaviors not normal to the Goliath people, but is willing to learn and understand should they not conflict with his own values. He is fluent in common (influences of English and Latin Spanish), Giant, and can speak in Gol-Kaa with other Goliaths.
