In this workshop, you'll learn the basics of batik - a wax resist on fabric and create a project using the process of fabric dyeing and wax batik. After applying wax with traditional tjanting tools, stamps, and brushes to fabric, we will dye using fiber dyes. You'll be sent home with a batik and directions for removing the wax if we do not have time to remove the wax in the workshop. You will create a project that you can display. If there is time, we will also do samples of different fabric dyeing techniques such as shibori and tie-dye, and forever learning means you will have the skills to make many more. It is great fun for a day workshop, so come with a friend or come and make new acquaintances!
In this workshop, you'll learn the basics of printmaking - creating stamps on various materials to print. We will start off with a linocut technique on "Easy Cut" material, to create a block that we will print and create a small edition. The block will be yours to take home. Afterwards, we will look at how to create a reduction print, where multiple colors will be stamped. We will work on how to create good registration, so that the colors line up. For other techniques to try, we will work on carving on unmounted linoleom, as well as drawing on styrofoam, and printing with markers. We will also look at the the techniques of serigraphy and intaglio, and we will print existing images to have the experience to print with screens, and a press. This workshop will get you to create, have fun, and take some ideas back into the classroom!
