Characteristic 5

Generate opportunities for leading mentorship, coaching, and service initiatives that empower providers, patients, and families with the skills to analyze problems, generate solutions, and evaluate alternatives to select evidence-based care that is patient-centered, safe, timely, effective, efficient, and equitable.

In developing a diabetes screening assessment tool in Practice Fusion at 12th Street Health and Wellness Center, I believe I have exhibited the ability to develop, lead, and mentor others.  While the overarching goal of my project was to assess users views on ease of use and satisfaction in the tool, it also granted me the opportunity to work with students from various colleges at UAMS and mentor them with my knowledge of diabetes gained over my years of practice and introduce them to what current guidelines say about care for diabetes patients.  This provided me the opportunity to interact and discuss with students the why behind what we were doing and what the implications were long term for this patient population.  At times, the students I interacted with had little or no experiences with this patient population so it became a teachable moment for me to engage these students.  Many times people just want the answer, but I was able to engage the students with questions to make them think about the why and look for the answers or alternatives so that the ultimate goals of patient-centered, safe, timely, effective, efficient, and equitable care could be delivered in a free clinic setting.
