There has been an unusual increase among the Saints from when they obtained the former Hymn Book, such that not one in ten of them were in possession of it; consequently, there is now offered to them a new Collection of Hymns, a work of various brothers and sisters among them, who dared to sing, without their enemies being able to say they are using a product of the world. It is true that two or three hymns of other denominations could have slipped in against our best efforts, by brethren sending them to us among some new ones. The initials of each one is with his hymns, other than those composed by the compiler, which are distinguished by a star (*). It can be seen by many an individual that there are numerous changes to his hymns, which was done with the permission of some, and unknowingly to others. Consequently, the collection was improved, if this is not the result: then if he is offended, I will request forgiveness, and make sure not to additionally make corrections on awkward hymns, but to set them aside. But it’s unlikely for the the true poet not to see many faults and lack of taste in this booklet, as in some others before them; and the publisher will be ready to recognize that "what is perfect" has not yet come into existence, but will before long. All the old book's hymns have been left behind, so that each one may choose to bind it with a new one, and through that have a more complete one. As can be seen, the hymns were mixed in this book without distinction, and an entirely new means was devised to find them. In the "Index" all the hymns are classified in two classes, one including hymns for use in public meetings, and the other for use in social meetings, so that there will be no cause for anyone to give inappropriate hymns to sing: and to that end the two parts are divided for consideration in different texts, so that a hymn can be found to answer every occasion. It is hoped, therefore, that no one will be heard any longer singing about leaving at the time they will assemble, nor think they are in council or conference when meeting in preaching or prayer. It would be wise for the singers to find out beforehand what hymns to sing, so they can use care about the proper pitch. It was determined that a few new English hymns be placed at the end, to be useful in absence of the English Hymn Book. After explaining so much, this book is all given to the service of the Saints, and to be under the blessing of God for their enjoyment, by their obedient servant,
J. DAVIS.
