The Pearl of Great Price, Liverpool, 1851
The Pearl of Great Price was first compiled as a collection of various documents by Franklin D. Richards for use in the British Mission. It was not originally envisioned as a separate volume of scripture. It was basically composed of four sections: 1) excerpts from Joseph Smith's revision or translation of the Bible, the "Inspired Version," 2) excerpts from the Doctrine and Covenants intended for use as a handbook of instructions for organizing and operating church branches, 3) Joseph Smith's history of church beginnings and a short statement of belief.
The original section titles and modern references are as follows:
Extracts from the Prophecy of Enoch, containing also a Revelation of the Gospel unto our father Adam, after he was driven out from the Garden of Eden. Revealed to Joseph Smith, December, 1830 (Moses 6:43–7:69)
