Reflection & Comment on Course Field Notes
The Artificial Intelligence in the Built Environment course has definitely altered my thinking about technology and its applications in the field of architecture throughout this semester. Prior to this course, I didn't see AI broadly as much more than a instrument to get info or finish trivial tasks fast.Before this course, I really felt that AI was only a device to acquire information or complete basic tasks promptly. I discovered that AI could be so much more throughout the day-to-day activities, assignments, and experiments we had in the semester. When used appropriately and responsibly, it can be a learning partner, a creative helper, and a way to be more productive.
A key takeaway from this course is that AI is not designed to take the place of human intelligence and creativity. Rather to augment human capacity and aid in decision-making processes. As architecture students, we must be able to investigate, analyse, design, communicate and resolve issues that are complex. AI can help in all these aspects, but human judgment, critical thinking, and creativity are still essential in the final decision. This helped me to gain more insight into the human-AI interaction.
Throughout this semester, I experimented with many AI tools, such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Grok, and individual AI image generation platforms. I found that every AI has its strong points and that there is no one size fits all solution to every problem. The single most crucial thing I learned was understanding which AI tool to use for which task, not relying on just one platform to deliver flawless results in all scenarios.
For instance, I discovered that ChatGPT has been highly useful in drafting ideas, composing scholarly texts, brainstorming concepts, creating reports, and structuring information into coherent outlines and formats. When presenting concepts, narratives and presentation content, it proved to be one of my most utilized resources for developing architectural concepts and refining design narratives. I thoroughly enjoyed using it to help explain my projects in a structured manner when I couldn't come up with the ideas in the first place.
Research, information retrieval and finding multiple perspectives of a topic were particularly useful with Gemini. Useful for me when I needed to get references or some additional vision on a topic, or inspiration during the initial project development. A comparison of information from other sources helped to reinforce my research process and make informed design decisions.
Claude was very handy for academic writing and analysing longer texts. It has taken me some time to improve upon reports, reflections, rearrange content, and enhance the overall quality of my written work. I found my use of Claude fascinating, as it allows me to use AI for content generation and also to communicate and critically review content.
Throughout the semester, Grok also helped me greatly with my education. It helped me immensely with going through current trends, new technologies and AI and built environment related discussions. It offered me unique perspectives and actionable takeaways, enabling me to approach this topic with a more thoughtful and insightful lens. Grok ignited my thinking to go beyond the academic profile and consider how artificial intelligence will influence the future of my profession. Overall, I gained a deeper understanding of the fast pace of AI development and the importance of ongoing learning for future architects and designers.
Another key element of my design were AI image-generation tools. Visual communication is a requirement for architecture students. With these tools I was able to rapidly sketch concepts, experiment with various design options and better convey design intent. Very helpful companions when conceptualizing and presenting my projects.
I think one of the most essential skills that I have acquired in this course is prompt engineering. Too vague and/or incorrect responses were common towards the beginning of the semester due to lack of clarity in instructions. The more I understood how to write detailed prompts, put some context into them, specify the objective and detail the requirements, the better AI-generated outputs were. It was a lesson in me that successful use of AI requires not only the application of the technology but also the ability to communicate effectively with it.
One of these valuable lessons was the realization of the constraints of AI. AI tools can be very powerful and efficient, but they're not always accurate. Information presented was sometimes incomplete, inaccurate or inappropriate in context. I learned some bad lessons to the detriment of my use of AI, as you will see. All output should be checked, assessed and cross-checked. Humans are still needed, particularly in the field of architecture, where their choice directly impacts people, space, and community.
I also learned more about using AI responsibly and professionally in this course. Instead of using AI to make my work, I have learned how to use AI to augment my learning, increase efficiency and enhance creativity. It's become something that has saved me a lot of time on repetitive tasks so I have time to concentrate on design thinking, problem solving, and exploration.
I found what I liked most about this course was the focus on the actual experimentation and reflection. The course also ensured a hands-on experience with different AI tools, comparing outputs, assessing pros and cons, and gaining insights into how AI can be used in the professional world. This hands-on method of teaching enhanced and enriched the learning process.
In the future, I see Artificial Intelligence being an ever more significant part of the landscape of architecture and our built environment. It could be used to assist in research, visualisation, sustainability analysis, documentation and design development. Certain skills, including creativity, empathy, ethical responsibility and professional judgement, will, however, continue to remain uniquely human and will be critical traits in the driving of architecture.
To sum up, the course has broadened my knowledge of AI and its applications in the architecture and the built world. Most significantly, it empowered me to confidently leverage AI tools efficiently, ethically, and wisely. I created skills to decide which AI tool is best for each project, how to prompt effectively with AI, and how to critically analyze AI generated outputs. These skills will not only aid in my academic endeavors but will also be useful in my future career as an architect.
