REFLECTION
The key aspect of this project was the incorporation of AI into the architectural design workflow. AI tools facilitated the analysis of design, development of concepts, visualisation, and presentation throughout the assignment, enabling the project to be explored from a variety of angles. Using AI, opportunities for improving daylight quality, the relationship between architecture and nature, reflection experiences and environmental performance were identified.
The experience proved that AI can speed up the design space exploration and give valuable insights that can be helpful but not obvious in conventional design processes. It also allowed for quicker testing of ideas and alternate design solutions. The project emphasized, however, that AI should be used as an assistant, rather than a replacement for the designer. Evaluation and decision about recommendations and solutions continued to be critical thinking, creativity and design judgement.
This assignment showed the integration of AI to support the design process and highlighted the vital role of human creativity and architectural decision-making. The integration of AI features with human input led to a more nuanced, responsive, and impactful design outcome.
HUMAN JUDGEMENT
While AI tools were used throughout the design process to generate analytics, recommendations, and visual outputs, the design of the architecture itself was still in the hands of humans. Each of the ideas generated by the AI was screened and considered based on the project goals, site characteristics, and initial design idea. Those strategies which conflicted with the identity of the project were rejected, and those strategies related to daylight performance, water reflection, passive environmental comfort, and nature integration were selected and integrated in the design. A significant role in the storytelling and meaningfulness of all the design decisions was allowed for human judgment in order to ensure that the project was feasible and architecturally sound.
This experience also revealed the great potential of AI in future architectural practice. It can support in research, analysis of design, concept development, visualization, and presentation, which enables the designers to work more efficiently and explore a larger number of options. But, AI should be considered as an assistant and collaborative tool, not a replacement for the architect. Creativity, critical thinking, contextual understanding and final decision making is still up to the human designer, but it can play a major role in parts of the design process.
