The red wolf or Canis Rufus is one of the most endangered animals in the world. This wolf is a medium in size, in between a Grey Wolf and a Coyote. The Red Wolf is native to the Southeastern part of the United States. Today the last of the wild Red Wolves can be found in North Carolina.
The Red Wolfs population was decimated in the 1960's due to the over use of predator control and loss of habitat. In 1973 the Red Wolf was put on the endangered species list. In 1980 the U.S. Fish and Wildlife declared the species extinct. Although in 1987 the some captive Red Wolves were bred and released into the wild. This is where the few Red Wolves left in North Carolina came from.
