Chinese Printing is one of “The Four Great Inventions” which has been representing rich Chinese history and fruitful Chinese tangible and intangible cultural heritage by practicing the Chinese traditional craftsmanship. However, Chinese Printing is facing the challenge of conservation owing to the rise of advanced printing technology. What the future generation should be borne in mind is the investigation of Chinese Printing which is the evidence to prove the significant human civilisation and cultural heritage. Hence, it is hopeful for the public to learn and remember the great invention of Chinese Printing through practical and approachable activities.
The exhibition centred around the notions of Joseph Needham. In the past, Chinese Printing was considered to be a practical application rather than a scientific study by the Chinese owing to lacking scientific sense. Therefore, only a few experiments and studies were investigated in the scientific aspect by the Chinese. On the other hand, Joseph Needham was a pioneer of western scholar who considered those Chinese practical applications as scientific techniques. Thus, Joseph Needham had researched and arranged Chinese printing in a scientific and systematic way. Joseph Needham’s researches have spread to the whole world and deliver the message that Chinese practical applications consolidate the foundation to the evolution of technology, especially printing. It is closely related to modern technologies and contributes to the world.
