Don't worry, you do NOT have to have it all figured out before graduation. If you do, that is amazing! If you don't, that is perfectly normal! We want to help you explore your post-high school options and see what the best fit is as you begin to take your next step!
After High School, many students choose to continue their education and go on to college! The college path does not look the same for every student, but there are a variety of different options to choose from! Some of these options include 4- year schools, community colleges, trade schools, public or private schools, etc. There is a school that is perfect for you!
Another path that many students find themselves pursuing is joining the Armed Forces. There are many different branches of the Armed Forces including the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, and Coast Guard. Each branch is unique and if this is a path that you are looking to pursue, there is a perfect branch for you!
Some students choose to enter the workforce directly after high school. This can look different for everyone! Some choose to join their family's business or even start their own! Some choose to work for a bit to save up some money. These are all fantastic options for students who are looking to join the workforce after graduation!
While life after high school may seem far away, it requires quite a bit of planning! Preparing for college and other paths after high school can start even in the 9th grade! Below we have created a timeline for what you as a student can focus on each year to set you up for success when it is time to think about your plans after graduation! Keep in mind that you and your family can meet with your college adviser regardless of what grade you are in!
9th Grade
Keep your grades up! By doing this, you can build yourself a solid foundation for the rest of your high school career!
Take career interest tests! This will allow you to begin brainstorming what careers you are interested in and what options could be a good fit for you after graduation!
Get involved! Not only is getting involved a way to build a sense of community and responsibility, but colleges also want to see you get involved outside of the classroom!
Keep an eye on college entrance requirements! While college is not at the forefront of your mind right now, it is a good idea to keep an eye on the classes you need to take in high school to set you up for success as you prepare for your future!
10th Grade
Research college options! While college is still a while away, it is a good idea to start looking early! There is no pressure with this, it is just for you to explore what colleges are out there!
Explore options for earning college credit in HS! There are numerous ways to earn college credit in high school. This includes taking CCP courses, AP courses, and more! Please reach out to your adviser or guidance counselor to learn more about how you can do this!
Keep your grades up! As you gear up for 11th grade, it is a good idea to keep your grades up to set yourself up for success and work to keep those grades up!
11th Grade
Keep your grades up! When you apply for college, oftentimes admissions panels are focusing on your grades from 11th grade. Make sure that you are not only taking courses that challenge you academically but also that you are working to keep those grades up! Who you are as a person is NOT defined by your grades, but we want to set you up for success!
Prepare to take college entrance exams! While SAT/ACT requirements were suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many schools are requiring these tests again for admission starting in the Fall 2024 semester. No worries! Here at AHS, you take the ACT at school during your 11th grade year. If you are interested in taking the SAT, please reach out to your adviser for help registering!
12th Grade
Keep up with deadlines! If you are not the best at checking your email, this is the year to work on that! The deadlines just keep rolling in during your 12th grade year and checking your email and our newsletter is a great way to keep up with them!
Complete your FAFSA and NC Residency Forms! It is so important to complete these during your senior year if you are planning on going to any school after high school! Completing your FAFSA means that you can get financial aid and completing your Residency form means that you can qualify for in-state tuition!
Apply to college! The time has come! All of your hard work has led up to this moment. Submit those college applications as early as possible!
