For this PowerPoint, I had to utilize a website that can be used to teach a concept to student and implement differentiation into the tool for one of my Special Education courses. This lesson plan gave me the opportunity to grow in my understanding of "the Illinois Learning Standards (23 Ill. Adm. Code 1.Appendix D), curriculum development process, content, learning theory, assessment, and student development and how to incorporate this knowledge in planning differentiated instruction;" (3A). I was able to understand "when and how to adjust plans based on outcome data, as well as student needs, goals, and responses;" (3D). The implementation of technology in this lesson allows all types of students to be able to participate due to incorporating "contemporary tools and resources to maximize student learning;" (3E). I was able to practice and grow in knowledge of how to "access and use a wide range of information and instructional technologies to enhance a student's ongoing growth and achievement;" (3N).
While planning this lesson, I had to take students' abilities, needs, and differences into account in order to be able to help students meet high expectations and goals set for them. One way I grew in my understanding was being able to "understand cultural, linguistic, cognitive, physical, and social and emotional differences, and consider the needs of each student when planning instruction;" (3C). I also grew to better my understanding of how to "establish high expectations for each student's learning and behavior;" (3H). This lesson plan required me to ask my professors and consult them on how to best support students. From this I grew in my understanding on how to "work with others to adapt and modify instruction to meet individual student needs;" (3P). I also grew in my understanding while planning for this lesson by being able to better "develop or select relevant instructional content, materials, resources, and strategies for differentiating instruction." (3Q).
From this technology tool, I grew to understand that I can use data and student responses to modify future lessons and be able to implement other tools and strategies to maximize effectiveness of the lessons while accommodating to students' needs while also keeping in mind students pre-established plans designed for their individual needs and abilities. When planning for this lesson I was able to better understand "how research and data guide instructional planning, delivery, and adaptation." (3G). I was able to better how I plan for differentiating by being able to better "use data to plan for differentiated instruction to allow for variations in individual learning needs;" (3J). My intention for the lesson was to be able to build instruction off of the responses of the students. I was able to grow in being able to "develop plans based on student responses and provide for different pathways based on student needs;" (3M). I was also able to further my understanding when planning this lesson on how to "address goals and objectives contained in plans developed under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (29 USC 794), individualized education programs (IEP) (see 23 Ill. Adm. Code 226 (Special Education)) or individual family service plans (IFSP) (see 23 Ill. Adm. Code 226 and 34 CFR 300.24; 2006);" (3O).
This lesson was developed for one of my ELL methods courses where the speaking and listening domain was focused on. This lesson was designed in order to "incorporate experiences into instructional practices that relate to a student's current life experiences and to future life experiences;" (3K). I was able to use my knowledge of how to differentiate for students who are ELL and I was able to "access and use a wide range of information and instructional technologies to enhance a student's ongoing growth and achievement;" (3N).
I planned this lesson as a way to help ELL students to progress in their speaking and listening skills as a part of developing "short- and long-range plans, including transition plans, consistent with curriculum goals, student diversity, and learning theory;" (3B). This lesson plan was a part of a larger unit plan where I was able to implement in being able to better support students so that they may learn while including ways they can learn best. This helped me grow in my understanding on how to "create short-term and long-term plans to achieve the expectations for student learning;" (3I). I also planned and created this lesson so that students were able to learn from others and be exposed to the different forms of diversity that is present amongst their peers.
