The competent teacher has in-depth understanding of content area knowledge that includes central concepts, methods of inquiry, structures of the disciplines, and content area literacy. The teacher creates meaningful learning experiences for each student based upon interactions among content area and pedagogical knowledge, and evidence-based practice.

This series of lessons was my first full planned group of lessons where I was teaching the concept of narrative writing to students all the way through students typing their final drafts. While teaching each part of this concept, I grew in my understanding that narrative writing is a central concept in proficient writing and helps students become more well rounded while writing along with teaching students how to problem solve in the editing and revision process in order for students to master being able to write narrative essays. I was able to better "understand major concepts, assumptions, debates, and principles; processes of inquiry; and theories that are central to the disciplines;" (2B). While planning for this lesson I was also able to grow to better "understand the cognitive processes associated with various kinds of learning (e.g., critical and creative thinking, problem-structuring and problem-solving, invention, memorization, and recall) 2 and ensures attention to these learning processes so that students can master content standards;" (2C).
I also was able to implement background knowledge that the specific group of students did not receive much instruction on how to write paragraphs so I modified instruction and worked through implementing differentiated methods of inquiry in order to best reach students. Due to my ability and effort to implement differentiated methods of inquiry, I was able to better understand "how diverse student characteristics and abilities affect processes of inquiry and influence patterns of learning;" (2E) and "the theory behind and the process for providing support to promote learning when concepts and skills are first being introduced;" (2G).
While planning and teaching these lessons, I was able to assess different resources to gather ideas on how I wanted to introduce and teach this concept. I grew to be able to understand and evaluate "teaching resources and materials for appropriateness as related to curricular content and each student's needs;" (2I). I was able to grow in my understanding and practice of how to utilize technology for planning this lesson along with having students type out their essays and practicing typing with proper spelling and grammar on Google Classroom. I was able to learn how to "demonstrate fluency technology systems, use technology to support instruction and enhance student learning, and design learning experiences to develop student skills in the application of technology appropriate to the disciplines;" (2L). I was able to give students the opportunity to create narratives based on real-life events that students were able to express through their writing. This experience heled me better understand how to "facilitate learning experiences that make connections to other content areas and to life experiences;" (2N).
For this lesson, I was teaching students how to add and subtract decimals. Throughout this lesson, I referenced how students will be using this in their lives especially when it comes to money, I used this opportunity to help students understand that what they learn can relate and be used to the outside world. I was able to grow in my understanding of this concept and I grew to understand "the relationship of knowledge within the disciplines to other content areas and to life applications;" (2D). I also showed students how to add and subtract decimals using a variety of methods (i.e. model method, standard method, etc.) in order to help each student understand the concept of adding and subtracting using decimals. I was able to better understand how to better "engage students in the processes of critical thinking and inquiry and address standards of evidence in the disciplines;" (2K).
With this lesson, I was challenged to grow on better explaining the concepts in multiple ways. I grew in my understanding on how to use "a variety of explanations and multiple representations of concepts that capture key ideas to help each student develop conceptual understanding and address common misunderstandings;" (2M). I was also able to evaluate how I felt I did teaching this lesson and where I did well and where there needs to be improvement from planning all the way to teaching the actual lesson. I was then able to grow in my understanding of how to "adjust practice to meet the needs of each student in content areas;" (2P) by identifying areas of lack or weakness within my teaching and also building upon the stronger areas. This lesson was a way for me to practice and master being able to show I have an understanding of the concepts and curriculums and I am able to provide multiple ways of teaching it.
