This work was shown and sold at Atelier Gallery in Nelson - Stations of the Cross exhibition.
A throng of vulture culture amassed and became the judge and jury. A mass of black marks on the target, Jesus, as they each pointed a finger and spoke out, shouting, “Crucify Him”! There is a sense of darkness, and volatile derision. Each layer and mark in this work has been laid down to express the energy of that moment when Jesus was condemned to death. Layered paintwork that splatters and sweeps in tandem against sharp, realistic imagery, opens up a potential for a narrative to emerge alongside its abstract counterparts. I am interested in inviting the viewer to respond to the work and add their own interpretation, and to move into a deeper dialogue within ourselves and with God about this point of Christ’s passion.

I painted this alongside my recent work 'Amass'.
Given the scenario of 'Amass' (when Jesus was condemned to death) my mind was lead down an alternate pathway... thinking about those who find it hard to see Christ's truth and in turn attack him. Even as Christians we experience this, not rejecting him but at times ignoring him... hopefully not too much. Still, Jesus fulfilled his plan and still allowed grace to all those who once rejected him.
Box barriers create pauses amongst the attack like marks...

The intention of these works, created during full lockdown in 2020, was to explore faith, faith in God, versus the fear of Covid-19, embracing the tension between the seen and unseen where the unseen virus and an unseen God are both at work.
Yes, a visual representation of the unseen is a paradox. It’s one that exists both in our lives and in paint. To achieve that goal I chose light and dark, layers, energy created through mark making and specific imagery to build a narrative for each viewer to interpret personally.
My prayer is that the presence of the light of the unseen God will bring peace.
