A three-person exhibition with Ian McGowan and Howard Esler Exhibited at Mangawhai Artists Gallery | 2025.
In this series, the concept of hope, symbolised by the rainbow and its vivid spectrum of colors as a universal emblem of promise and renewal is explored.
Drawing from the transformative years of her artistic practice, RBC weaves together recurring motifs and themes that have defined her work. These pieces engage in a visual dialogue with the past, reimagining familiar ideas while uncovering new perspectives. Viewers are invited to navigate a layered narrative, where symbolic imagery serves as a guide.
The approach is described as a "symbolic narrative," an intricate dance of human inadequacies and the enduring quest for spiritual answers. This exploration transforms the painting board into a site of problem-solving, mirroring the complexities of life itself. Each piece unfolds as a multifaceted composition, merging abstraction, realism, text, and a rich palette of vibrant and subdued tones. The dynamic interplay of marks adds an emotional resonance, offering viewers a gateway to reflection.
A notable shift in this series is the reintroduction of the human figure. Standing alongside text and abstract elements, the figure anchors the work, bridging past explorations with the present. This decision was born from a desire to reconnect with the tangible, grounding the artist’s evolving vision.
The creative journey began with a somber spark—a dark thought—but quickly transformed as the artist embraced the power of colour. Vibrancy flooded the works, imbuing them with a sense of hope. The allowance of colour takes the lead without restraint, in an intuitive and subconscious manner." The rainbow, and it’s individual colours act as a symbol in the series, and emerges as a beacon of solace in uncertain times and a hopefulness for today.
As the series evolved, so too did the artist's intentions. What began as a contemplation of existential confusion in a digitally saturated world became something more fluid. The works now reflect the ever-shifting nature of identity and presence in this information-clogged age, a theme that resonates deeply in our current moment.
This collection is a testament to the artist's commitment to evolution and introspection, offering a poignant commentary on humanity’s search for meaning in a chaotic world. Each piece is an invitation to pause, reflect, and find beauty in the layers of being.
