The students at SCALE have been studying online since the pandemic came. Students still get constant support from school: email, materials, chromebook, homework assignments. I was a student at SCALE before the pandemic, and I am in the online class now. Being in the online class is the best for me.
There are the advantages that only online learning can bring out. It’s more flexible and we don’t have to waste time traveling to and from school. I used to spend about 40 to 50 minutes from my house to school and from school to go back home . Now I can sleep a little longer in the morning. I can take a small break when I feel tired, and even have a snack or drink during the lesson to stay energized. Online learning can be very helpful for when we are unable to go to school . It improves my technical skill. When I learn in the online class, I can learn about Google Docs and share my writing with the teacher and our class. Online classes help students work from anywhere at the same time. I’m happy that I can continue to learn English in an online class.
There are disadvantages in online classes; one of the biggest challenges of online learning is the struggle with focusing on the screen for a long period of time. My eyes get tired. Student teamwork in the classroom needs face-to-face communication. The internet connection or wifi sometimes is unstable. When that happens, I can’t hear the other students, and I can’t talk to them. Students lack direct contact with teachers. Last year, when our class did experiments about flowers, the teacher came to every group to explain and answer direct questions from students about flowers’ growth. We touched flowers, stems, leaves, roots, petals, pistils. After a few days, we saw all of them change color and wither. Online we can see things, but we cannot touch them. I miss being with my classmates in person, shaking hands, and sometimes sharing a snack.
Finally, in my opinion, online class is better than traditional class because it is more convenient for everyone. Even though online class has problems, the advantages are greater than the disadvantages. I am happy to see my classmates and my teacher in the online classes.
Does it come
Like a flu in the winter?
Or snow like an iceberg
And then melt thinner?
Is it dangerous like a death?
Or does it have a happy life?
Maybe it is just a sickness
Like the people work too much
Or does it explode in the world?
I like the springtime of the year. It starts to get warm, and we can go outside and see the buds of trees and the flowers are growing. Sometimes it rains, but that is good because it helps the trees and the flowers grow.
The buds of trees and flowers come in lots of different shapes and colors, and they have been there waiting to grow. The flowers are pretty with many colors and aroma. The butterflies can smell the flowers, and then they come out. The group of them had small and big butterflies. Their wings are beautiful with many different colors. The butterflies enjoy the flowers.
You may have missed it if you were not paying attention to the Spring flowers blooming. The birds on the trees are singing , and they make a nest from things like dried grass, twigs, moss. The bird lays eggs in the nest.
I love my family. I have a big family with six siblings, two sisters and four brothers. They are married and have kids. One of my sisters lives in Florida with her family. All of my other siblings and my parents live in Massachusetts. We care about each other; we share joys and sorrows. We usually have family reunion parties with three generations at my brother's house in Hingham. The kids have fun together. The adults cook; put up decorations, flowers, and balloons; and confide in each other about their families. Especially everyone is respectful of my parents. We take turns caring for them, cooking for them, giving them a ride when they want to go somewhere. They are very happy and proud about their kids and grandchildren. Because they want to meet their kids and grandchildren, we have parties, and everyone enjoys that.
The new year in Vietnam is called the Lunar New Year. It falls on the week from the end of January to February. Lunar NewYear is celebrated in most Asian countries: Vietnam, China, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Malaysia…
The New Year season actually begins about two weeks before the first day of Lunar New Year when everyone shops for new clothes, cleans their homes, and pays off any debts. They decorate their homes with Kumquat trees, apricot trees , marigold flowers, daisies, cherry blossoms… They put money in red envelopes to give to children and elders. It will be lucky money. At this time the streets and markets are overflowing with shoppers stocking up with extra foods and treats for the new year.
They make traditional holiday foods called banh tet, banh chung. They make packages of sticky rice with pork and mung beans. They have dried foods like pumpkin jam, coconut jam... Those foods are set on altars to honor the ancestors, and everyone eats them throughout the holiday season.
The most important celebration in Viet Nam culture is New Year. New Year is a day off for all people. Schools, businesses, and government offices are closed. The entire Lunar New Year holiday usually lasts from seven to eight days each year.
The cities empty out because most people travel to the homes of their parents and grandparents. The cost of bus tickets, train tickets, and airplane tickets increases. The bus station, train station, and airport are crowded.
Fireworks start a few days before the new year, but the important fireworks are the time at the end of the old year (New Year’s Eve). The first day of the New Year: no cooking, no sweeping, don’t spill stuff, do not argue , do not borrow at the beginning of the year, don’t say bad things…
During the New Year holiday families gather together to visit their relatives for good luck and to worship their ancestors. There is a lion dance coming to every house with fireworks .The owner of the house hangs a red envelope on the roof, and then a lion dances up to get it.
Businesses, schools, and state agencies will be reopened after a few days off. People turn back to work, students go back to school. They wish the New Year to start with all things lucky.
