About this slide deck:
This is a slide deck I wrote about 10 years ago (2014/5).
I'm not sure why I even did this. π
Maybe because 8k HDTVs were on the horizon and I felt that the human eye couldn't even discern 4k in normal living room scenarios (as this deck hopefully shows) let alone 8k, so why move toward all the excess bandwidth/transmission burden?
The foundational assumption made in this deck is that the human eye's angular resolution limit is 1 arcminute.Β I think I got this number from a Wikipedia page.
A Note About Image Compression
Because typical broadcasts of HDTV (1080p = 1920x1080) are strongly compressed, the actual displayed signal comes nowhere close to fully utilizing the pixel count in a 1080p, let alone a 4k TV.
