Model yacht sailing offers the chance to learn about the skills for sailing and racing model yachts. From complete novice to experienced skipper we have all levels of sailors and hence are able to enjoy sailing in friendly competition at the appropriate level or just messing about with boats. If you think this might be for you just come along on a sailing day and have a go, we will lend you a boat and teach you how to sail. That way you can try before buying your own boat.
Members sail many types of yachts but three classes are most common; DragonFlite 65, DragonFlite 95 and International One Metre (IOM). Racing yachts are classified according to rules set by the Model Yachting Association https://www.mya-uk.org.uk/ This ensures yachts of similar type can compete equally.
The DragonFlite boats are bought ready built with just the rigging to assemble. They are small enough to fit in a car complete and of relatively modest cost. Just search on line for Dragonflite as there are many suppliers.
The IOM boats are much larger and more costly and difficult to fit in a car fully rigged.
All types of yacht provide a good sailing experience.

Club members build and sail models of real sailing boats or of a similar style. These provide both interest in the actual construction which can be from a kit or scratch built as well as the challenge of sailing them. Some have intricate detailing and crew!
